            Interview: ATX / Shock!
done by Tomcat / Controlled Dreams

- When I came in, you told me several
interesting information about changes in Shock!.

- After the FLaG Party, Tsc and Gene decided to
make "minor" changes on the group. This meant
not only changing the aspect, but the members,
the boards, practically everything. They spread
a textfile about this, in which they write that
because of inactivity and other reasons they
sack half of the group. Even me, as a founder,
was almost sacked, with Das. Luckily, we could
eliminate the misunderstandings, but there are
still white patches according the arrange. Now
the group looks like this:

        Tsc - coder, founder, sysop
        Atx - musician, founder, PR
        Genesis - coder
        Das - graphic artist
        Trajic - musician
        Deansdale - musician
        True - raytracing, rendering

Figaro is at the end of his twenties, his work
is more important for him than scene. Rian begun
his activity in Majic12, BBD and Sabe didn't fit
into the profile. Since a time practically only
I spread the files on the boards, and they got
to FTP sites by Tsc. I may be a Shock!ing
experience for some, but Shock lives and
prospers, more productions coming soon in the
near future.

- In Dada's opinion the Hungarian scene is dead.
What do you think about it?

- I think it is not true in this form. Neither
inside the country, nor abroad have we such bad
reputation. We are in the elite of Europe, and
by this in the world's elite, because the
American and Asian scene is far after the
European. The Hungarian scene is full of
talented people, but the forces are divided. We
founded Shock as an "United Hungarian Scene"
with about 70 members. Our imagination (Tsc,
Trs, and me) was that if Maxwood, Tsc, Rian,
Rendall, Gene, etc., etc. were working together
on a large project, we could wash the European
scene away. I still reserve this idea o'mine,
but I confess, that organizing such a group, and
such a demo or demos would be almost impossible.
Then we remain in having talented people, who
protect the Hungarian scene from death.

- What would you do, if would anyway, against
the flood of lameness? I mean, on most parties
there are a bunch of khm, 'attenders', who are
only appear for the Doom and lamer compos, while
less and less newcomers are interested in
regular demos.

- I think the "kill the lamers" and other
slogans are outdated, but I am still dreaming
about a party, where the less scene-oriented
people would get a separate place. Concretely,
it would look like the following: the DOOM,
FUN, LAMER compos would take place on Friday,
and I would not need to watch weak productions
until we reach the main attraction, what you
know, for me and those, who are on the "better"
side of the scene, is still the PC demo compo.
We needn't bust the lamers, because they also
pay for the entry ticket, but we must give them
space somewhere else, not in the middle of the
scene compos. I am sorry to see that the scene
is divided into two: those, who still think
demoing seriously, and others, who only release
a lamer demo, or a music, and win the
Doom/Mortal/Duke Nukem/etc. compos.

- Others think that scene is divided also
another way: some think elitism = concetiedness,
others not.

- Thanks for being personal, but since one year
I took from my face back. ;) The word elite
doesn't live today. It is faded, outdated, dead.
Some think it seriously, and some believe that
the party, and the compos are just fool's game.
Of course we need also this, but it must not be
let to dominate.

- Why can't we see scene-diskmags nowadays? As
we know, Tsc was Hungary's "No.1 article
writer", as someone dunnowhere said...

- The explanation is simple. Who could write
about scene things seriously, that makes demos
instead of articles, and who can't make a demo,
but a text/picture reader and a paging routine
is up to him, he makes a diskmag, but that is
not about what it should be.

- Now, yes... our era's pestilence is dumping
diskmagazines.

- The cure is simple: do not read, what is not
good enough.

- What is good?

- Good is what interests _YOU_. Good for me (I
can only tell this) what is informative, while
funny and affords good reading. There are only a
little of these mags. But of course the subject
is also important: the SCENE. And _only_ the
scene. What I read is PAIN. And there are some I
only run through: IMPHOBIA, SCENIAL. I do not
read Hungarian magazines since the
FreeStyle/Scanner/Runtime times.

- And now personal questions. How many groups
are you in?

- Practically or in spirit?

- Let's say all 2...

- Practically I am noted as a member in SHOCK,
ANARCHY PC, MFC, LABEL ZERO, and GABBER. In my
spirit SHOCK is the most important, and now we
begun hardly to do LABEL ZERO, because there are
no groups with such style in Hungary, only this
one (only ANSI, ASCII, and specific muzax: acid,
breakbeat, jungle).

- FiRG?

- The great secret project. In the beginning of
1995 the idea was born to hold a distorting
mirror before the scene, and since then we only
release stuffs in which we criticize - sometimes
a bit rudely - the different faces of the scene.
This is why 'Frszelni J' ['It is good to
saw', a lamer demo from SceNEst '96 - Tomcat]
what was not done by us, because practically it
don't criticize anything, but that's good, and
we laughed a lot on it. Now they are the
Official Firgfanclub. Anyway the name of the
groups came from my idea, when I proposed to
chide Grif because their name reversed is Firg.
From that time then we done intrigues with name
Firg. Maybe we will choose other ways in the
near future...

- What posts do you serve? I mean, by groups.

- In SHOCK, I am a founder, I write musics, what
is squeezed into background because of the
domination of musicians, so my organizery and PR
work is the most important, what I also do these
moments. Sometimes I arrange things, and make
the group's path so that other members even
don't know about it. In Anarchy, I am the
'Hungarian leader' =) and musician. There was
practically nothing released yet from me in that
group, so I don't think my memberstatus in that
group. Gabber was founded by Melan and me, but I
have no idea, how is in it now, and what are we
doing, even not what I do. The Label Zero is a
duo, Hanx and me. What I wrote about it
(ANSI/ASCII/music) I also do. In MFC, I am a
founder, it was created by my and two of my
classmates in 1992. It had no special echoes,
some cracks, greets, and incomprehension,
nothing else. Luckily, it can not be told about
Shock.

- Let's think that you have to found a group,
only from Hungarians, two people for all
posts...

- The coders would be TSC and GENE, because they
are the most actively collaborating pair of
coders in Hungary. The graphicians would be
RENDALL and BEAST. The change would be WARD. He
is the best Hungarian hand graphician today, I
think. I like too much musicians. Mark the
correct: MINSTREL, TRAJIC, DEANSDALE, RIAN,
SNOTTY, ILLEGAL. There is nothing else really
needed in a demogroup, but in better groups
there is ususally an organizer, a raytracer,
and a modemtrader/swapper, but nowadays everyone
swaps, in major or minor, every way. I could get
stuff enough to fill my entire hard disk
capacity (1,1 GB) twice a week, but despite this
I am not a swapper.

- You told me to ask about your private life.

- I didn't say it. But well. Now I will begin my
first year on the juristic university. I have a
girlfriend, who is nice and also clever, this is
why she doesn't fit me, but it is good she
exists. My family is well, thanks. ;))
Something concrete, which may interest others.

- Forget it... Previously you reminded me one of
my questions, that 'what would you propose for
someone who is beginning the scene just now',
but I ask what you would not propose.

- Don't let you to get under the influence of
others, neither in style, nor in others. Always
give yourself, and all what you know. Never tell
more, and never less, and also do not want. I
think real friendship is the strongest
connecting force in the scene. The other is
nearly the opposite of it: the competition,
rivalizing. This is what you must get in, be
enough for this, and you will be enough for the
scene.

- What will be the end of the Astroidea-Shock
competition?

- I think, this is the sound of the future, the
ANTIQ, where unfortunately I won't be present,
but Astroidea only showed one demo till this
time. We made 4 demos within 7 months, and three
of these are quality demos (in timed order, the
last three, but we just didn't win first place
with right these, but with 2 Complex, we won two
(Exe and PC-X demo compo)). Astroidea didn't
even finish his demo for FLaG, but they want to
make a big blow on ANTIQ. It is about time they
are a bit dropfallen. Me personally don't have
problems with anybody, they are a talented
group, but they didn't show enough activity to
really speak about competition.

- Btw. future. Nice plans according this? (in
scene and not scene meaning)

- A nice demo on ANTIQ. Nice productions also
later, activity, but unfortunately everyone will
have less time from autumn. But there will be no
parties in the autumn, not counting the
cancelled EDGE, or the one what I think will not
be organized, or really weak BRUTAL (anyway, if
you read the BRUTAL invitation text, it is
nearly the same to RAGE invitation, only a few
things are updated). You say there will be
CACHE2, but it also "was" last year.

- And here, at the end... Three wishes?

- SHOCK - long life and prosperity!
GIRLFRIEND - long f*** and more!
UNIVERSITY - success and stuff... for my own
  life.

Thank you for the interview, in the name of the
group too.

- I would be expected to say thanks... but
thanks anyway! :)
