--- sep 2000 --------------------------------------------------------------

As usual, this edition has been plagued by...delays :) My ability to connect
to the net has been sporadic at best lately, and my deepest apologies to
those who have e-mailed me response, and have not yet received a reply :(
Others have mailed me lots of valuable information, which I haven't had the
time to include yet, so if some fixes you requsted are still not there, I
can only apologise. My 'SCENERY\TODO' directory is LARGE :)

Still, development continues even though my connection with the rest of the
world is not as updated as I wish it was... I have been busy reviewing,
fixing and adding, and I hope you will find this latest version as
entertaining as you have told me you've found the previous ones. Here's a
quick list of the major news for this release:

Three new partyfiles (now dubbed history files, btw), for the years 1986,
  1999 and 2000.
Extended information in history files, with launch dates for new,
important software and hardware, to put things in a more historical
  perspective.
Preliminary 'sites' section added to the end of this editorial file.
'winners' section, a demo of the year award overview, added to the
  editorial file.

...And we are now over 1mb in size, zipped!

_still_ WANTED FOR THE NEXT VERSION: INTERNET DETECTIVE!
I could really use someone with the time and net access to search out and
correct all the homepage adresses for Scenery, the ones contained within now
are TERRIBLY OUTDATED! Please, someone?

I am currently undergoing the laborious task of creating cd backups of my
amiga demoscene collection, as well as reviewing, ripping and generally
going through a shitload of old diskboxes ;) I expect to finish the first cd
in a couple of months time, and if anyone is interested, making it available
to the public at reasonable prices. Everything will be sorted in an orderly
fashion, with explanatory text files at every end. I will also try to
conform to the ISO standard (8+3 filenames) so that the cd can be read
across any platform, and so that as many people as possible can access it.
I'd like to do _A LOT_ of these cds, but I need more material (scene junkie
;). Therefore I have decided that anyone who shares an entire diskbox (or
cd!) with their own scene stuff (tools too!) can have a free cd for their
trouble. I will ofcourse return any disks and cds after I have finished
taking copies. Apply at the usual adress.

--- introduction ----------------------------------------------------------

SCENERY is the most complete and comprehensive text-based (and thanks to
Buzz, web-based :) guide to the Amiga demoscene there is. It's based on the
best of several other productions, but with definitive improvements in both
quality and quantity. Built over a period of several years, Scenery is a
unique production in both scope and detail. Nowhere else will you find a
party index or demo reviews as complete as ours; nowhere else will you find
more trivia, information and plain entertainment than here.

BEFORE I leave you to explore Scenery for yourselves, I'd just like to
mention a production that has deeply influenced Scenery, and which the very
first version was based upon: The Amiga Demo List (ADL) by Jean-Guy Speton.
Today very little, if anything, of ADL remains in Scenery - it has all been
rewritten - but if Jean-Guy is reading this please get in touch. I feel we
may have a lot to talk about :)

SCENERY is FREEWARE. Permission is granted to do whatever you wish with this
material, including using it as a basis for your own research. Anything
you'd like to contribute to the Scenery project should be mailed to me.
Even the smallest snippets of information is both welcome and appreciated.
Enjoy.

--- additional info -------------------------------------------------------

PLEASE be advised that all reviews and opinions voiced in Scenery are just
that - my personal opinions - and not the gospel truth. If I write a
negative review of your demo, always keep in mind that it's just one
person's opinion. I am NOT trying to discourage anyone from continuing to
write demos :)

WHEN I first started making Scenery it was more as a tool to help myself
than anything else. As mentioned above, the basis was The Amiga Demo List,
but today Scenery contains almost no trace of its origins. In a way, I feel
I did not steal the work made on ADL, I merely continued and expanded on
what Jean-Guy Speton started. In many respects, Mr.Speton is as guilty of
committing SCENERY as I am, since without the Amiga Demo List the idea
might never have been born. He had the idea, I just put in a lot of work :)

--- guide to reviews and entries ------------------------------------------

HERE'S what scenery entry might look like:

Cool Group (CLG, http://www.coolgroup.org, 199x-199x).
------------------------------------------------------
NOR> Cool Norwegian (code), Cool Painter (gfx), Cool Musician (music).
HOL> Cool Gfxian (gfx, ex Cool Graphics Team, new 02/97).
???> The Guy From Another Place (code gfx music ascii sysop 'BBS').

The history of the group, if it has an interesting one :). If it's a group
that's been around, with some tradition, expect me to go on endlessly and
get terribly nostalgic :D

News, stuff that happened, who joined what, etc.

Demo Name (1997, 01.01, AGA 4MB HD Multifile Slideshow).
code: Coder, gfx: Artist, music: Musician.
  3rd at The Party 199x intro/demo/slideshow/whatever competition.
review: Seeing as this is just a dummy example and not a real review, I
won't bother with writing anything remotely comprehensible here. So hrjs!
 GLE tested A1200/030-50/2mb chip, 4mb fast/3.0.

The heading perhaps needs extra explanation. The basic format is this:

Demo Name (year, dd.mm, requirements description).

Here are some of the things you'll encounter:

ECS The production works fine with OCS/ECS chipsets (mb chip assumed).
AGA The production requires the AGA chipset (2mb chip assumed).
CYB The production requires/supports CyberGfx compatible 24-bit
        graphics.
  P16 The production requires/supports Picasso 16 compatible 24-bit
        graphics.
020 The production requires a 68020 or higher processor.
With AGA productions, this is a given, so it will only appear on
        OCS/ECS productions.
030 The production requires a 68030 or higher processor.
040 The production requires a 68040 or higher processor.
060 The production requires a 68060 or higher processor.
PPC The production requires a PowerPC processor.

MB The production requires MB fast ram.
1MB The production requires 1MB fast ram.
2MB The production requires 2MB fast ram.
4MB The production requires 4MB fast ram.
8MB The production requires 8MB fast ram.
16MB The production requires 16MB fast ram.
32MB The production requires 32MB fast ram.

FPU The production requires a Floating Point Unit maths coprocessor.
HD The production requires Hard Disk installation.

Sometimes you'll find references to things like SLH11, RAW5 or ROM7 - these
are references to the diskmags where the news were encountered. They are
nothing more than remnants of old development, and will gradually disappear.

--- credits ---------------------------------------------------------------

SCENERY has been developed since 1996 by Glenn Lunder (sceneryamiga@yahoo.com),
based on the last version of the Amiga Demo List (ADL), release 940814, by
Jean-Guy Speton. In addition, significant contributions have been made by
these wonderful people and productions:

Zeg (express@munich.netsurf.de) is the author of the Amiga Demo Scene
Encyclopedia, a production much like this, and has contributed AMAZING
amounts of material for Scenery, especially in the field of party
research. Zeg has now agreed to become a co-editor of Scenery together
with me. His production is also hosted at Exotica (http://exotica.fix.no).

Buzz (buzz@totem.fix.no) is the webmaster at Exotica (http://exotica.fix.
no), which hosts Scenery, manages the Exotica mailing list (see the
website for details) - and has also coded the web interface.

_SoLO_ (MikeJ51@hotmail.com) is a webmaster for several great demo related
sites (see list below) - and still finds time to help me with his
knowledge, especially of the French scene. Check out his sites:

  World Of Cracktros (c64 amiga) - http://cracktros.planet-d.net/
  DHTML - DEMOS (pc) - http://dhtmldemos.planet-d.net/
The Skarla Web Site (amiga) - http://www.multimania.com/skarlamiga/

In addition, these people have contributed information, either personally or
through their productions: (I have not printed your e-mail adressess, if you
want yours to be included, let me know!)

Tom "U-235/KGB and Spirit/Dominators" Iversen for useful information and a
  real nice mail! :)
Paul Marten for contributing information about the English illegal scene.
 The "Crackerland" website (http://www.hackerland.de/crackerland), from
which I 'borrowed' some information. Hope you don't mind!
 Kenji Irie for his DemoRating.guide 1.01 (06.06.1996).
Wizard for his Demos of the World v3.0 (party results).
Skid/ozone for his Scene Book amigaguide file (21-July-97).
Shock! for their Party Results Pack 5.0 (1996-08-06, pc).

--- in conclusion ---------------------------------------------------------

SCENERY is well on its way to becoming what I hoped it would be, but it's
still far from perfect. If you read and like Scenery, I'd love it if you'd
like to support it. What I need is for people to send me their demos for
review, help me review demos, and help me test demos on their machines.
All you need to do to be part of the Scenery Team is to run some demos on
your machine and tell us how they behave! There's little point to the
compatibility information if the only info that ever finds its way there is
from MY machine, right?

SOMETHING else I clearly need is someone with a steady InterNet access and a
lot of spare time to help me keep my homepage references relatively up to
date. Any volunteers write to the below address, please. Any kind of support
on offer is welcomed with open arms, even just a few kind words on a
postcard would help my motivation :) As long as you enjoy Scenery I'll
enjoy making it for you.

YOU may also write to me for (slow :) demo trading. I'm not interested in
'the latest warez', but rather in any kind of demoscene related software.
So if you're sitting on a huge collection of old demos, please share!
Anyone making their old diskboxes available to the archive will be richly
rewarded with lots and lots of positive karma :D Seriously, I offer
anything of mine for anything of yours.

If anyone has demoscene related CD-ROM's (amiga, pc, c64), please get in
touch - perhaps you'd like to sell it to me for a reasonable price?
Naturally cd backups of personal demo collections are also interesting.
Anything contributed to me will also (should they need it) be a part of Zeg
and Buzz' massive demoscene history site - to premiere soon on Exotica...

Any correspondence to:

Please mail me about any incorrect information, additional information or
for contributing material! Or just to tell what a great job I'm doing :-)

Scenery is freeware. Use this information in any way you want. Permission is
hereby granted for its distribution on internet web and ftp sites, and any
reasonably priced cd-roms. You may, if you feel really generous, donate a
copy to me :)

--- sites -----------------------------------------------------------------

This is a new section here, don't expect it to be very complete yet...
It's just supposed to be a list of good resources for demosceners on any
platform, with a focus on quality - just listing around 25 top resources.
There are some specific groups here now, just to fill it out, but these will
probably be removed... I really need some help with this section!

http://www.1oopercent.de - 100% [amiga ascii] - Very nicely designed, easy
to navigate site. Utils (for amiga bbsprograms), ascii collections and
modules for download - webmaster: Mirage/100%.

http://www.amigascne.org and ftp://ftp.amigascne.org - Amigascene [amiga] -
Terribly outdated, but valuable resource which hosts some good sites
(including Scoopex and Mystic) - and the ftp site is a treasure trove of
older amiga scene stuff. Leech now, before it's gone... Anyone with the
bandwidth and the good heart to download the entire ftp and make me a cd?

http://www.asciiscene.org - Asciiscene [ascii] - This is supposed to be the
new hq for the amiga ascii scene, but it's not up yet. Keep checking!

http://www.c64.org - c64.org [c64] - Essential c64 resource, links to pretty
much every c64 site in existence!

http://exotica.fix.no - Exotica [amiga] - Pure amiga nostalgia, with lots to
read and lots of downloads, focusing on music in every other format but MOD.
Oh, and it hosts this little production... webmaster: Buzz (hi!).

http://www.planet-d.net - Planet D [general] - This site hosts literally
HUNDREDS of demoscene related sites, across every platform that has a scene
- even acorn and atari are represented! Very good basis for exploration :)

http://www.scene.org and ftp://ftp.scene.org - Scene.org [pc] - This is the
number 1 pc demoscene resource, and their ftp site is probably the currently
largest pc demoscene archive. Their own web content is limited, but they
host lots of other groups, so it's a good starting point.

http://www.silents.dk - The Silents [pc] - I found this almost 'by
accident', but it's interesting nonetheless. Not really any scene content,
but the webmaster and general manager is one Rene Vindum - perhaps better
known to many of you as The Master/TSL DK...

http://www.trsi.de - TRSI Tool Revolution [pc] - The redesigned, new TRSI
pages recently went online, but only with some pc tools online at present.
They do promise to put up all their old demos on all platforms, so it's
probably worth checking back every now and then...
