                             WORLD-WIDE POLICY

1. Introduction.

TechNet is a high quality message network driven by unpaid
persons with all kind of backgrounds.

TechNet is an adult network. Continuous annoying behaviour will
result in a prompt disconnection from the network. Everybody can
make mistakes, but TechNet will not accept continuous misbehaviour
or personal attacks in the same way as other networks do, which
indeed will give other members a hard time enjoying the network.
That's what it is all about, -having a good time-!

2. Technical Standards.

TechNet is built on the same technical standards used in
FidoNet. This means that every node should use mailer software
applying to the standards defined in FidoNet Technical Standards
        Documents.

3. Node structure.

TechNet is divided into regions, which for example can be a
country. The region is divided into nets which contain a number of
nodes living in the same geographic area. The geographic
division is primarily based on the geographic location and the
pricestructure of the local telephone companies. A new node
should therefore be member of the nearest net in his/her
DA(m)N NEWS 2-02 Str. 7 9 Jan 1994

        geographic area.

5. Definitions and responsibilities.

TechNet is organized by keypersons of the network. The
'administration' staff consists of unpaid people who keep TechNet
running and is therefore willing to spend time on the net. Each
keyperson has one of the following titles:

        5.1. Headquarters.

The headquarters (HQ) are the founder of TechNet and
                some special selected people.
They can only be deprived of their tasks by the founder
                of the network

The headquarters are responsible for controlling the
network so that the network goes the direction in which it
                originally was intended to go.

Headquarters also handle policy complaints which the
region coordinators are not able or willing to handle.

        5.2. Region coordinators.

Region coordinators (RC) are primary selected by the
headquarters. When a new region is stable and running,
the RC role can be elected by all nodes of the specific
                TechNet region.

The responsibilities of the RC's are to control the
region so that the geographic division of the area is
maintained. Region coordinators can make some local
policies as long they don't conflict with the
international policies stated in this document.

Every RC is in the night from Wednesday to Thursday
obliged to supply the Founder/HQ with an update
file of the TechNet nodelist, called RC*.upd.

        5.3. Region hosts.

Region hosts (RH) are the net coordinators for the
specific geographic area. They are selected by the RC
                for the specific region.

Region hosts have the responsibilities to control the
mailflow in the net in the geographic part
                of the region.
Also, the region hosts should ensure that netmails are
                routed properly.

The region host handles applications for new members of
TechNet and is also reponsible for disconnection of
nodes. This task can be placed in the hands of the hubs,
                if any.

Every host is in the night from MONDAY to TUESDAY
obliged to supply the region coordinator with an
update file of the TechNet nodelist called HOST*.UPD.

        5.4. Hubs.

If a net contains many nodes, the region host can decide
to divide the net into subnets controlled by hubs. The
hubs are always selected by the region host.

The hubs have the reponsibility to ensure that the mailflow
of the subnet is running optimal. The hubs should not
handle policy complaints. Hubs can be considered as a
                technical coordinators for the subnet.

Every hub is obliged to supply on a weekly basis by
his/her host determined day a so called updatefile of
the nodelist for TechNet. That file contains the last
actual information about his/her nodelist part and is
                called: HUB*.UPD.

        5.5. Nodes.

A node is a system which allows BBS users or points to
connect to the TechNet conferences and files.

It's the nodes decision whether points should be allowed on
                the nodes system.

The node has the responsibility for it's users/points
and must take care of the status of every individual
conference in a way that people can get access to all
conferences/files that they may, according to the status
                defined to the conference/file.
Every Node with Points is obliged to supply a
pointlist to his/her Host/Hub, containing the last
actual information about his/her pointlist part, and is
                called: NODE*.LST.

        5.6. Points.

Points are privileged users of a BBS system or mailer
                system.

Points may only be connected to one node of TechNet.

They are 'users' of a node's system and may connect
themselves to TechNet conferences/files which the node
offers. A point cannot force a node to obtain a conference
that the node hasn't. All TechNet files must always
be available, -these files are listed in section 9 of this
                document-.

        5.7. BBS users.

DA(m)N NEWS 2-02 Str. 9 9 Jan 1994

Users of a BBS are allowed to read/write messages in
                TechNet conferences as long as:

                        1) The conference is public for users.
                        2) The user is not expelled from one or more
                           conferences.

Users of a BBS are allowed to access TechNet files if the
                file is public for users.

6. General rules.

To ensure that everybody can have a good time participating
in TechNet, the following rules should be obeyed to at all times:

        6.1. Conferences.

When writing messages in conferences, the correct
language must be used. The right language is determined
                by the conference name:

                <name>.TNL Dutch areas.
                <name>.TDK Danish areas.
                <name>.TIN International areas (English only!).
                <name>.T?? Other Countries

A second condition is that the language, used in the
area's, is according to the commonly accepted rules of
                decency.

In case of violation of these rules, the trespasser will
be informed of this violation; first by the area supporter
or, if an area supporter is not available, by a HQ member,
if possible by DIRECT NETMAIL. In case of continuing
violation of this rule, RH of the node has the right to deprive
the violating node/point/user of the right to further usage of
                the area.

        6.2. Availability of TechNet conferences.

Every region host must obtain every conference of the TechNet
network from one of the region coordinators and forward all
messages from ALL area's to his/her hub and/or nodes,
unless the hub or all nodes have made it clear that
messages of a certain area do not have to be forwarded
                anymore.

Every hub must obtain every message area of the TechNet
network from his/her host and forward all messages of
all area's to his/her nodes, unless all nodes made it
clear that messages of a certain area do not have to be
forwarded anymore. The same goes for nodes which have
                downlinks.

DA(m)N NEWS 2-02 Str. 10 9 Jan 1994

        6.3. Availibility of TechNet files.

All nodes of TechNet must keep the latest policy, a
recent version of the TechNet nodelist and all other
TechNet files (listed in section 9 of this document) for
file-request or download at no charge.

        6.4. Polling another system.

If a node is registered with CM (Continious Mail) in the
nodelist, it may be polled 24 hour a day. If not, you
should ensure that the system is open before calling.
Continous calling a non-CM system outside opening hours
                is considered as annoying behaviour.

        6.5. File requesting.

A node may decide itself whether file requests should be
allowed. File request are in general only allowed during
non-mail hours. Specific time ranges can be defined by
                the node itself.

Points may only file request from other nodes than it's
uplink when the node has announced that points may file
                request.

        6.6. New user access.

New users of a BBS should, if possible, only be allowed
to read TechNet conferences at 1st login.

If the SysOp wants to validate users before any access,
this should be done within 5 working days.

        6.7. Nodelist.

Every system connected to the TechNet Mailnet has to use
the nodelist, TechList, as main- or as sub-nodelist.

Every change which occurs and has effect on the nodelist
has to be passed through by the node to his or her
region host/hub who will take care of further
distribution to his host or in case of hosts, to the
                region coordinator.

Every host/hub takes care of his/her part of the TechNet
mailnet. This means that he/she is also responsible for the
information about his/her net or node part in the nodelist.

7. Policy complaints.

        7.1. Complaints, in general.

All persons involved in TechNet is unpaid people who spend,
more or less, time in TechNet. It may often be a hobby and
not everybody can spend 24 hours a day controlling their
DA(m)N NEWS 2-02 Str. 11 9 Jan 1994

function in TechNet. You should therefore have some
patience and not be to easily annoyed.

However, if you find that somebody doesn't obey the rules or
acts annoying, a complaint can be launched. You are expected
to try to solve the problem together with the other
part before involving other parts. Solutions on this
level will always bring the best results.

Please let the area supporters handle conflicts in
conferences, -it's their job-. If you find a comment
necessary in a conference, then send it as a personal
                netmail.

        7.2. Who handles complaints ?

Complaints are handled by either headquarters, regional
                coordinators or region hosts.

If a node complaints about another node in the same net,
the complaint should go to the region host of the net.

If a node complaints about another node in another net
(or region), the complaint should go to the RC of the
                region.

If a complaint is over a region host, the complaint
should go to the regional coordinator.

If the complaint is over a regional coordinator, the
complaint should go to one of the headquarters.

        7.3. Upgrading of complaints.

If your case is dismissed, you can choose to resend your
complaint with all messages in the case to the upper
next level (RH -> RC -> HQ). But please do all parts a
favour to consider the conclusion of the case before
                upgrading the complaint.

The headquarter's level is the last, it's decission is
                final.

        7.4. Disconnection of nodes.

Disconnection of nodes can be performed by HQ's, RC's or
                RH's.

If a node has to be disconnected, it should only happen
when the nodes downlinks are connected to another node.

The disconnection is controlled by the region host who
has the responsibility to ensure that downlinks are
                placed somewhere else.

        7.5. Disconnection of points.
DA(m)N NEWS 2-02 Str. 12 9 Jan 1994

If a HQ, RC or RH requests a point to be disconnected,
the node has to apply the decision and perform it as
                soon as possible.

A disconnection can be total or partial. A partial
disconnection means disconnection from one or more
                conferences.

7.6. Removing region coordinators or region hosts.

A headquarter can at any time remove any keyperson from
his/her position. A region coordinator can remove a region
                host from his/her position.

A region host can add/remove hubs from the net as the RH
                like.

About all possible disconnections the HQ/Founder should be
                informed.

8. Message conferences.

8.1. Choice of area to write in..

There are that many different area's in TechNet, so that for
almost every message there is a suitable area. Please be
utmost careful in your choice of the right area. Thus
we can avoid disturbing 'area pollution'.

        8.2. Area Supporters.

Many area's are being supported by 'AREA-SUPPORTERS',
who have some knowledge about the subjects they're
                dealing with. They're task is divided into several parts;

Supporting the area, which among other things
means that they see to it, that the right
messages are posted in the right area's and
that the used language is decent and
                          acceptable towards others.

Functioning as central point for questions,
regarding subjects related to the goals of
                          his/her area.

Area-Supporters shall try, in case of a small
mailflow, to the best of his/her ability,
to provide his/her area with as interesting
messages as possible and related to the area's
                          title.
This with the intention to keep his/her
area(s) as interesting as possible for all
                          the people in TechNet.

                         Under particular circumstances, if this
can't be made for a indefinitely period,
DA(m)N NEWS 2-02 Str. 13 9 Jan 1994

the Area-Suporter will, in consultation with
the Region Conroler or HQ, look forward for a
satisfying solution - in some cases a fill up
of the vacature - all in the interest of a
                          as interesting as possible TechNet

9. TechNet files.

The following files are the official TechNet files. The latest
version of all files should be available on every HQ, RC and RH
and should be routed automatically for every node.

TECHRULE.TXT - TechNet Rules (this document).

        TECHINFO.TXT - TechNet Information files.

TECHLIST.A?? - The official nodelist for TechNet. All nodes
attached to TechNet are located in this file. The
nodelist is packed with the ARC archiving
                       utility.

TECHDIFF.A?? - TechNet nodelist update. The update is packed
                       with the ARC archieving utility.

TECH-APP.TXT - With this form you request to be connected to the
The TechNet Mailnet Foundation in EUROPE. After
filling in the form, please rename it to
<YOUR_BBSNAME>.APP to avoid duplicates and send
it to a headquarter, a region coordinator, or a
                       region host/hub living nearby you.

You will then be called back and get your
                       nodenumber and all necessary files.

TECH-CHG.TXT - Use this form to report any change in your
bbs data like phonenumber, online hours etc.
After filling in this form, act as above and
send it to the host/hub you are connected to.

TECH-REM.TXT - Ofcourse it is possible that you want to quit
the TechNet Mailnet. Fill in the form and send it
                       to your host/hub.

TECH-SUG.TXT - With this form you may tell your wishes to the
                       TechNet HEADQUARTERS about (dis)connections of
echomail areas. After filling out, act as in all
                       other cases.

TECH-ARA.TXT - The list of area's in the TechNet Mailnet
Foundation. You will also find the status
attached to every conference, which tells who is
                       allowed to access the conference.

================================================================================

                   *Novell DSG Host System BBS*

HOST SYSTEM MAIN NUMBERS & CONFIGURATION
The BBS phone number is 408-649-3443. This number and 6 other lines that
are a connected to it have Supra 2400 baud modems. The Supra modems
automatically adjust to a caller's baud rate if it is lower than 2400.

There is also a 9600 U.S. Robotics Courier V.32bis modem at 408-649-3696.
This modem will also adjust to the same baud rate as the caller. Using the
U.S. Robotics HST Standard, speeds as high as 14,400 baud are supported.
Lower speed modems (2400 or lower) should not be used to call this line as
unexpected hangups can occur.

WORD,PARITY,STOP
The BBS is set for a protocol of 8,N,1. "8" refers to the word length. "N"
refers to parity which in this case is NONE. "1" refers to the stop bit. No
matter what baud rate is used to call into the BBS the 8,N,1
word, parity, stop protocol combination needs to remain the same. Most
communications software will indicate the protocols that are to be used
prior to dialing.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Indications of having the wrong protocol are the appearance of "garbage"
characters on the screen or the inability to enter any text. Make sure that
your word, parity, stop are set at 8,N,1. If these are set correctly, make
sure that you are not trying to force some type of error correction control
such as MNP. The modems on 3443 do not support MNP. The 9600 baud modem on
3696 can support MNP as well as V.42 and the U.S. Robotics HST error
control.

Random lockups or a large number of retries on downloading a file are an
indication of a possible noisy or bad phone line. Hang up and try again at
a later time.

Random lockups can also occur if you have some of the phone companies
optional services such as Call Waiting. Call Waiting must be disabled while
communicating or an incoming call will disconnect the BBS. (additional
information on Call Waiting is given later)

If there are problems just getting a connection with the BBS the modem may
be timing out. Some communications software limits the time that the
software waits for a carrier detect. Try extending this time. This can also
happen intermittently if the phone line has noise at the same frequency as
the carrier.

The BBS Software:

LOGIN AND REGISTRATION
The BBS uses the MajorBBS software from Galacticomm. The first screen
displayed by the BBS will be a greeting message followed by a request for a
UserID.
DA(m)N NEWS 2-02 Str. 15 9 Jan 1994

If you have never called the BBS before just type "new" (the BBS is not
case sensitive). The BBS will step you through the registration process.
Registration is required so that access to different levels of the system
can be controlled and determine the number of users that the system has.
All information is considered confidential.

If you have called within the last 60 days enter your UserID and Password.
Callers are given 3 tries for correct UserID or password.

MAIN MENU
The Main Menu is the starting point for all callers to the BBS. From here
you can select all of the services that the BBS offers. The most important
are the 3 options that concern downloading files. These are highlighted

FREQUENTLY REQUESTED UPDATES
This option leads to a sub-menu that allows downloading of the most popular
updates on the BBS. The only additional information that needs to be
provided is the download protocol to use (see Download Protocols). This is
the quickest way to download an update on the BBS.

POPULAR DOCUMENTS
This option displays a sub-menu that allows you to chose some of the most
popular documents downloaded from the BBS. Like the Updates menu the only
additional information that you need to provide is the download protocol.

FILES MENU
All information in the BBS is organized into Libraries. The Libraries
reflect the various products supported by the BBS. For example, the DRDOS
Library contains all DR DOS files while the NWLITE Library contains all
NetWare Lite files. The File Menu option displays a sub-menu that allows
you to select which of the Libraries you wish to investigate.

For detailed information on how to navigate the BBS Libraries download the
file BBSUSER.DOC located in the UTILS Library. This document is offered to
all new callers to the BBS automatically as part of the NEW USER greeting.

PROTOCOLS
Download protocols are not a random choice. A decision needs to be made
based on the type of file being downloaded and the software you are using
to communicate with the BBS.

For example, ASCII download protocol cannot be used on any files that have
the .ZIP extension (which are binary files not ASCII). An option is
available to view the contents of ZIP files.

If you are not familiar with the type of download protocols your software
supports then check your documentation. The same protocol must be used by
both the BBS and your communications software.

All protocols, except ZMODEM, also require that the download process be
started manually on the caller side. ZMODEM is also the only protocol that
can recover an aborted download. All other protocols must start over after
an aborted download.

Once you have selected a protocol and answered any questions that may
appear (these depend on the protocol selected) the BBS will try to begin
the file transfer. If problems are encountered in beginning a download, you
may have selected a protocol that is not supported by your software. The
BBS will timeout if it does not receive a response from your software in
approximately 1 minute.

If the download appears to begin and then suddenly aborts it may just be a
bad phone line. The BBS will allow for a number of retries before canceling
a download.

CALL WAITING
If you are suddenly logged off the BBS, the phone line may have been
disconnected. This can occur if Call Waiting is active on the phone line
that you are calling from. Call Waiting cuts the line for a short period of
time. This is detected by the BBS as a disconnect and it hangs up.

Call waiting can be canceled for the duration of a call by adding *70 as a
prefix. For example: *70 1 408 649 3443 will disable Call Waiting while
calling the BBS.

This option is for touch-tone phones and may change depending on the
calling area. Check the white pages in the phone book for information on
disabling Call Waiting.

                                    CLIPPER
================================================================================

                            ANNOUNCE & REQUEST

Q: Regarding ANNOUNCE & REQUEST -- what was wrong with using the word
EXTERNAL and what is the advantage of CA switching to the word REQUEST?

A: [Don Caton:]

The words "ANNOUNCE" and "REQUEST" more accurately describe what's
happening. Too much of our terminology is vague or arcane, and I think
it was a cool idea to implement these things. They can always clean up
the underlying implementation without affecting the end result.

ANNOUNCE declares a public symbol for a particular module. It's like a
module saying "if you're looking for a bunch of code named xxx, here I
am". It just gives an identifying name to a source code module
(generally an .obj file) so that it can be pulled into your application
even if none of the routines in that module are called directly (which
would normally cause it to be linked in anyhow).

Probably the main reason this was implemented is that INIT and EXIT
procs generate private names so they're not visible to the linker, and
some mechanism like this was necessary to instruct the linker to
include them. ANNOUNCE/REQUEST allows modules like this to stay in
libraries and still get linked instead of having to explicitly link
them as obj files or use special linker instructions.

This technique has been used internally in Clipper for some time. For
example, when you compile with /b the compiler automatically includes
something similar to a 'REQUEST _VDBG' in the generated obj file.
Inside CLIPPER.LIB, there is a module named vdbg.obj which has the
equivalent of an 'ANNOUNCE _VDBG' inside. The linker matches them up
and, voila! This is how the debugger stuff gets pulled in
automagically. The module vdbg.obj references other stuff that the
debugger needs and it starts off a chain reaction which isn't complete
until all the necessary modules are found by the linker.

As you can see, the request for a single identifier can pull in a whole
sybsystem. It's something that perhaps many Clipper programmers won't
need to use, but if you're putting together your own code libraries,
    it's definitely something worth investigating.

Q: But doesn't "REQUEST" do exactly the same thing "EXTERNAL" used to do?
Also, isn't "EXTERNAL" used in Assembly and "EXTERN" used in C? Not to
belabor the point, but I'm just curious as to why you think "REQUEST"
    more accurately describes what's happening.

A: [Robert diFalco:]

Yes, REQUEST is the same as EXTERNAL. However, EXTERNAL is just kind of
a stupid name. When you do an "EXTERNAL DESCEND" what you really mean
is "REQUEST DESCEND". Since we are getting into dynamic modules with
DA(m)N NEWS 2-02 Str. 18 9 Jan 1994

Clipper with such things as RDD's and INIT/EXIT PROCEDUREs we needed a
sane and readable way to deal with them without having the old "you
must link this object file into the root".

Therefore, with a third party product such as SuccessWare's DBFSix, for
example, you would just add "REQUEST DBFSix" at the top of your main
PRG file. ANNOUNCE allows you to create a REQUESTable module
identifier for a module of routines. As Don, said, the implementation
can always be changed but the decisions were correct. Here's an example
of how to use it in a different way than described above.

Say that you have three clients that all have the same essential code,
code you put in a library for reuse. However, one of the three clients
wants LOTUS style menus, one wants BOX menus and another wants
Pull-Down menus. If all your menu subsystem protocols are the same,
you would put each engine into a different .LIB with an OBJ ANNOUNCEing
each type. Hence, you would solve your problem by simply adding this
line to the top of "Client C"'s application:

REQUEST PullDown // or LOTUSMENU or BOXMENU

No this is a simple example and there may be other soloutions, but it
should give you some ideas as to how to modularize dynamic code. For
example, Client specific code could REQUEST a special ANNOUNCEd module
    specific to that Client.

       REQUEST clientXYZ

    [Don Caton:]

I think "REQUEST" more accurately describes what's happening because
the presence of that statement means that you are _requesting_ the
named module to be linked into the application. Yes, it's exactly the
same as the "extrn" declarator in assembly (in effect, but not in
implementation), but it isn't the same as "extern" in C.

The "extern" keyword in C is a modifier and means two different things:
one, it's placed in front of a variable declaration to indicate that
storage for the variable is declared somewhere else, i.e. "external" to
the module the declaration appears in. It instructs the compiler not
to generate any storage space for that variable in the module being
    compiled.

The other use is as a modifier in a function prototype. In that
context, "extern" indicates that the function body exists somewhere
else; again, "external" to the current source module (this usage is
    superfluous).

Neither of these uses of extern have any parallel in Clipper. The mere
presence of a statement like 'extern int xyz;' does not generate a
request for the symbol 'xyz', you actually have to reference 'xyz'
somewhere in the code for the C compiler to generate an extdef for the
symbol. Same with function prototypes declared as extern. If that was
sufficient to pull in a symbol, just including an .H file with
prototypes would drag in unnecessary code.

DA(m)N NEWS 2-02 Str. 19 9 Jan 1994

There really isn't anything like Clipper's REQUEST in the C language.
In C you have to do something like:

           extern int xyz;

           static void DoNothing( void ) {
              int dummy = xyz;
           }

You would never call this routine but the compiler doesn't know that,
and it causes whatever module that defines 'xyz' to be linked in.

In the Obscure Trivia Dept., a routine exactly like the one above
appears in some of Clipper's RDD modules in order to get their
superclass RDD's dyn modules linked in (which, like Clipper's INIT/EXIT
functions, are mostly invisible to the linker as well).

There was no prior equivalent to ANNOUNCE in Clipper, although you
could achieve the same result by declaring a function or procedure with
the desired name and just don't put any code in it (which is exactly
    what ANNOUNCE does anyhow).

Q: What do you mean by the term "dynamic modules"? Does that simply mean
that the particular module requested may change depending on the
situation or particular need at the time?

A: [diFalco] In this context I was referring to modules which have no
explicit references to them in other parts of the EXE. This would be
the case in a data-driven application, for example.

| Whoa - what happened here? Wasn't there a report in the August 1993
| issue about OWS95B in this section of the report? Yes, there was, but it
| has been moved. After discussion with Aryeh Goretsky, SysOp of the
| McAfee VirusForum on CompuServe (76702,1714), this file has been
| reclassified. Look in The Trojan Wars section for details and for Aryeh
| Goretsky's comments.

HW Mikael Winterkvist reports that he received a program for study from
Patrik Sjoberg, the author of Febbs. The program Patrik found was called
VIP and claimed to be a "new, easy to use archive-program" called "Visual
  Illusions Pack."

Mikael and Patrik both studied the program and determined that it was
merely an altered version of the LHA Archiver v1.13. To make matters
worse, the "author" asked for a registration fee. Save your money.

The Hack That Wouldn't Die has reared its ugly head again: XTRATANK is
still floating around out there, according to a sighting by Mike Ledoux
(1:132/202). This file was reported in detail in the 1992 Full Archive
Edition of The Hack Report (HACK92FA), but it seems to be so unwilling to
go away that it is mentioned again here. For those of you new to The
Hack Report, XTRATANK is a confirmed and tested hoax that does _not_
double your hard drive space, regardless of what you might see when you
do a DIR command. If you have doubts, try the Fitzgerald test below.

  *** The Fitzgerald Test

Here is the now-famous Fitzgerald Test, devised by Tim Fitzgerald of
1:3800/18.0 and validated through testing performed by Bill Logan of The
Pueblo Group (1:300/22). Try this if you think you have managed to get
XTRATANK to work on your system. Follow these simple steps:

      1. Run CHKDSK and write down the free space it reports as free.
      2. Do a DIR command and write down what XTRATANK reports.
      3. Copy any text file to a new text file.
      4. Repeat steps 1 and 2, and compare.

You will see that XTRATANK reports that twice as much disk space is taken
up by the new text file.

Michael Toth (1:115/439.7) has located another incident of the Amiga
Emulator hoax, reported in the 1992 Full Archive Edition of The Hack

The file claims to emulate Kickstart 1.2, version 33.192, on an IBM
compatible. Michael's tests show that this file doesn't do much, if
anything - 15 minutes worth of waiting after running the program produced
  no results.

Recently, an archive of Frisk's (a.k.a. Fridrik Skulason's) F-Prot Virus
Scanner v2.07 has been distributed with a "registration form" from a
company called JLT. According to Frisk, this is not legitimate. He says
that JLT contacted him in the fall of 1992, asking if they could
distribute F-Prot, collect registration fees, and forward 50% of the fees
to him. Frisk didn't want them to do this, but it appears that an
archive with the "registration form" may have slipped into distribution.
In Frisk's words, "...this version is most certainly not something that I
  want distributed."

From the "Not Really A Program, but Interesting Anyway" department, a
"press release" has entered distribution, claiming that PKWare Inc. has
filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The letter is dated Friday, February
26, 1993, and supposedly quotes Mark Gresbach of PKWare in the statement.

However, in a message posted in the CompuServe PKWARE forum on March 1,
1993, PKWare employee Douglas Hay states that this is not true. Douglas
also points out that the perpetrator of the hoax misspelled the word
Milwaukee (as 'Milwaukie'), and that one of the three phone numbers in
the message for PKWare is wrong. In short, ignore the letter - PKWare
  has _not_ filed bankruptcy.

PROTO-T. This message is the actual hoax: there may be
one or more PROTO-T viruses around now, but none do what
was claimed in the hoax message. This hack, PKZ305, was
not infected with any virus, nor did it contain Trojan
code, per testing by Bill Logan (1:300/22), HW Jeff White,
                and HW Bill Lambdin.

                              AmiPro for OS/2

Well, I had the weekend to play with it, and here's my impression of Ami
 Pro for OS/2:

I am _never_ going back to Ami Pro for Windows.

Surprised? I was too. After all the bad vibes AP/2 has gotten on the net,
I expected much worse than I got. Granted, I'm following the advice of all
you good netfolk (20MB swapper.dat, auto backup turned off...), but this
is still a much better product than any I've seen before, for any
platform. (I have my reasons for saying this, your milage may vary.)

First things first. Installation. This needs work. Installation is the
first impression a user gets of an app, and AP/2's is, well, rude. It
allowed me to select things on my desktop, but they launched slowly, and
by the time they finally opened, AP/2 obnoxiously popped to the front
begging for another disk. I eventually had to accept that I was for all
intents and purposes single tasking for the duration of the install.
Grrr... It left me wondering about things to come.

After the install, I launched Ami Pro for OS/2. I gotta come clean here.
Loading (even with a default swap file of 20MB) is much slower than
launching AP/W seamlessly in its own session. It takes about 65 seconds on
my 8MB 486dx33. It's also slower when saving, converting documents from WP
format, scrolling and closing a file. So why do I love the darn thing so
 much? The answer is simple.

 Speed.

No that's not a typo and I'm not a masochist. It's slower in many things
than its Windows counterpart, it's much faster where it counts (for me,
anyway). I use a _lot_ of bitmaps in my documents, which is why
frame-based word processors like Ami Pro and DeScribe are the only only
ones that really fit my needs. I could never get used to DeScribe's UI,
and Ami Pro for Windows took forever to draw the bitmaps. In Ami Pro for
OS/2, they appear instantly, allowing me to keep editing without a hitch.
This means a lot to me, and from a usability point of view for outweighs
the other delays. It should also be noted that on my 486dx33 w/ 16MB RAM
at work, AP/2 is fast. Really. In everything I did on my work machine,
AP/2 was faster than Word for Windows 2.0 seamless.

Other neat things dept: HPFS support. _Finally_ a word processor that
allows me to name a file "Plot Summary" instead of "PLOT_SUM.SAM". (To be
fair, DeScribe had this too, but I couldn't figure out the UI.) PFS:Works
let me use long filenames, but it didn't register a file type with the WPS
so I still had to use extensions. "This is an example of long file
names.WPD" looks kinda silly. It should be noted that I didn't even have
to run AP/2 to convert my AP/W docs. I simply opened their settings
notebooks, changed the file type from "Plain Text" to "Ami Pro Document"
 and renamed them something sensible.

I know I sound (particularly to Mike Timbol :^) ) like a broken record,
but the Workplace Shell integration is great. Like I said, my docs are
chock full 'o bitmaps. To add one with AP/2, I open the WPS folder the
bitmap's in (and thanks to Joeview, they all have little thumbnails as
DA(m)N NEWS 2-02 Str. 30 9 Jan 1994

icons), and drag the bitmap to the document. A frame is automatically
created where I dropped the icon and the bitmap is loaded instantly.
 Happy happy, joy joy!

Even using the HP550C drivers that seem to be causing so much trouble, my
printouts looked great, and when set to print in the background, focus
comes back to user very quickly. I couldn't get a doc to print via drag
and drop from the WPS without opening AP/2, though. Strange that Lotus
 left that out.

Look and feel dept: This definately looks and feels like an OS/2 app.
With the weird exception of it's use of fixed size scroll bars, everything
about the app says OS/2,right down to the notebooks for styles and
preferences. IMO, it's much better _looking_ than AP/W, and it feels more
 comfortable too.

WRT the missing drawing and charting, I didn't notice, but to be fair I
also have 1-2-3 and Freelance. This might be an issue to someone without
Smartsuite, but I get along just fine.

In the final analysis, I _like_ this app. It's a little slower than it's
Windows counterpart, but it's ease of use and OS/2 specific features more
than make up for any shortcomings it may have.

DOS a CLIPPER, "Not Enough Memory" a zakousnut systm

 --------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
  - Microsoft MS-DOS operating system version 6.0
 --------------------------------------------------------------------
 Summary:
After you upgrade to MS-DOS 6.0, a "not enough memory" error message may
appear or your system may stop responding (hang) when you try to run an
application generated with Computer Associates' Clipper program.

To correct this problem, add the NOEMS and NOVCPI switches to the
EMM386.EXE command in your CONFIG.SYS file. For example:

    device=c:\dos\emm386.exe noems novcpi

The application generated with Clipper should now run on your system.

You can also work around this problem by using the RAM switch instead of
the NOEMS switch with EMM386.EXE or you can remove the DEVICE= statement
for EMM386.EXE from your CONFIG.SYS file.

EMM386.EXE is a Virtual Control Program Interface (VCPI) server. VCPI is a
program interface that allows expanded memory services (EMS) emulators and
DOS extenders to coexist within a 80386/80486 environment.

Note: Clipper is an XBASE compiler.

Clipper is manufactured by Computer Associates International, a vendor
independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise,
regarding this product's performance or reliability.

I tried to find him on the Christian cross, but He was not there; I
went to the Temple of the Hindus and to the pagodas, but I could
not find a trace of Him anywhere. I searched on the mountains and
in the valleys but neither in the heights nor in the depths was I able
to find Him. I went to the Caaba in Mecca, but He was not there
either. I questioned the scholars and philosophers but He was
beyond their understanding. I then looked into my heart and it was
there where He dwelled that I saw Him; He was nowhere else to be
found"
