material presented here is usually included for a good reason, so please
take the time to read at least the new entries quite carefully. Also, if
you have any input on any of the listed files, do not hesitate to send it
  in to your Hack Squad.

Quite a few folks questioned a release of Vern Buerg's LIST calling
itself v7.8a. This one actually came down one of the file distribution
networks, if memory serves. However, in response to these inquiries,
your Hack Squad called up The Motherboard BBS, Mr. Buerg's home system.
On that system was posted the following bulletin:

        ================================
    ===  July 15:  LIST78A.ZIP is bogus  ===============================
        ================================

A beta test version of LIST 7.8a was uploaded to other systems by
mistake. It is not an official version, and it has bugs, e.g. the
    mouse doesn't work.

A new version will be released next week. Those waiting for
registered copies will be sent their's first, then it will be posted
on VOR and CIS. The manual was dramatically updated and is now 54
pages with full color cover. We'll have some on the shelves at the
    store next week.

So, this definitely qualifies as a "misfit" - it isn't a hack, hoax, or
  Trojan - it's an accident.

Robert Jung's ARJ archiver has had a new release in non-beta form. The
legitimate file can be identified by an ARJ-SECURED envelope. However,
making equally big news (unfortunately) were several sightings of pirated
versions of the registered v2.41 file. These were most often seen as a
ZIP file (?) with the following internal files:

The giveaway here is the ARJUTIL.ARJ file - this contains programs that
are only available to registered users.

This causes a problem as far as listing this in the .col/.idx files is
concerned: the person who distributed the pirated version used the same
filename as the real thing. The only way you're going to be able to tell
the pirated version from the legitimate one will be to look inside your
copy of the archive. If you see either the ARJUTIL.ARJ file inside, or
the files ARJR.EXE or DEARJ.EXE, then you have the pirated copy. Please
delete it. (Note - version 2.41 has been superseded - please see the
Hacked Files section of this report for the latest version as of this
  writing.)

Dotti Rosier (1:114/107) found a message on a local BBS system that might
be worth reading. The text read as follows:

WARNING: Nobody download PHACS1.EXE and NETWORK1.EXE..They have
the Yankee Doodle virus that is only detectable by SCANV99....
please clean these two exe files IMMEDIATELY and in case you
have run them already, there might b some other files that are
infected. CLEAN99 will clean them just fine. Sorry for the
inconvenience but I recently found out that my HD was infected
and therefore, every file that I compile is infected. Thank you
       for your patience.

I can only assume that these were self extracting archives - no
descriptions of the files were available.

Steve Winter (1:153/7070) reported on a file called SUB1_V21. This
claimed to be a program called SUB, a directory list utility. Steve
checked out the file prior to running the install program and found no
anomalies. However, once installed, he says he began to get conflicting
directory reads, disk full errors, and problems booting. Somehow, his
  boot record had been damaged.

According to his testing, the file passes scans with F-Prot v2.08a and
does not alert McAfee's VShield v104. He says the archive contains two
files - INSTALL.EXE and SUB.SPZ, which contains the executable. INSTALL
creates a subdirectory and extracts files from the SUB.SPZ file.

Steve says he is attempting to get another copy for testing. Until that
time, I can't say for sure if he was the victim of a system glitch, buggy
software, or a true Trojan. If anyone out there has this file, please
contact your local HackWatcher or myself so that we can arrange for
  testing.

Mark Harris (1:121/26.1) found a pair of archives called DEATH_1 and
DEATH_2 on a local system. The files were described as a new Apogee game
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 19 16 Dub 1994

called Deathbringer. The archives contained no documentation, and all
program files were dated 1990 or 1991. When run, the game displayed the
name "Deathbringer," but gave no company or copyright information. Scans
by McAfee's ViruScan and Frisk's F-Prot proved negative.

Mark has provided additional information that adds to the suspicion that
this is a pirated file. The program begins with the following screen:

Empire, in association with ODE and The Mystery Machine,
                                 presents
                         -=*=- DEATHBRINGER -=*=-

Deathbringer, Karn and all Deathbringer Characters and the
distinctive likenesses thereof are Trademarks of Abaddon Duke of
       Hell Group Inc.

  Mark goes on to say:

There was no documentation in the archive (which I will
continue to hold on to, in case you need it for any reason)
giving any playing instructions, no shareware notice or
registration request, nothing whatsoever to indicate the origin
of this program except for the above. That's what prompted me
to write in the first place; it looks to me (especially
considering the quality of the graphics,) like this is a
commercial program with as much of the copyright and
identifying screens hacked out of it as possible.

As an Apogee Tech Support Specialist, I can personally verify that this
is not a product of Apogee. Mark's opinion is that this is a hack of a
commercial game: I tend to agree. Jim Wells (1:2613/261) forwarded the
file contents, along with some other information still being looked into:
he feels that this is a "hacked" version of the official release, whether
shareware or commercial. Rick McBride (1:363/178) says it is indeed
commercial, as he saw it on a CD-ROM about a year ago. However, he does
not remember the publisher's name (possibly Psygnosis, he says) - only
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 20 16 Dub 1994

that it is an arcade-style D&D game.

This is still being researched. In the meantime, I would appreciate any
information that a user of the possible commercial version could forward
  - please help your Hack Squad verify this one.

Chuck Cypert (1:124/2113) reported in the FidoNet VIRUS_INFO echo that
the SysOp of the CompUSA BBS in Carrollton, TX had a problem with a file
called UNIXHAC. The SysOp reports that this file formatted his hard
drive. No further details were available, as the SysOp had already
deleted the file. If someone has a copy of this, again, please contact
one of The HackWatchers or myself.

| Harvey Woien (1:102/752) forwarded a report from a user of The
| Motherboard (Vern Buerg's BBS), Ted R. Marcus, about a version of the
| Microsoft Mouse Driver claiming to be version 9.0. It also appears that
| this file came down a file distribution network under the filename
| MSMAUS90, possibly originating in Germany. Your Hack Squad has found a
| copy of the same archive Ted reported on, and confirms some of his
| observations on the file (MOUSE900), quoted here:

| 1. Microsoft Diagnostics and InfoPlus report this "9.00" driver as
| version 8.00. The latest "official" version of which I am aware is
| 8.20a.

| 2. The "new" driver is significantly smaller than version 8.20a.

| 3. The "new" driver supports the undocumented /U switch (which loads
| much of the driver into the HMA). Version 8.0 and 8.1 supported this
| feature, but Microsoft removed it from version 8.2 (shipped with DOS
| 6.0). The support for the /U switch suggests that the driver is, in
| fact, version 8.0.

| 4. Examining the MOUSE.COM driver file reveals one instance where the
| version number (repeated in the initialization message for each
| language the driver supports) is "9.40". That indicates either
| uncharacteristic sloppiness on the part of Microsoft -- or, more
| likely, sloppiness on the part of a hacker.

| More information on MOUSE900 comes from Jeffery Bradley (1:3635/35). He
| informed the folks here at Hack Central Station that there is indeed a
| legitimate v9.0 of the Microsoft Mouse Driver. However, after talking
| with Microsoft, he did confirm that this should not be distributed via
| BBS systems: it is commercial only, as previously reported.

Yet another file that doesn't fit into any of the report categories: a
report from Wen-Chung Wu (1:102/342) concerns the archive PKLT120R, which
claims to be version 1.20 of PKLite. This is actually PKLite
Professional v1.12, a commercial product, which has been hacked to show
version 1.20 instead of 1.12. To make matters worse, the PKLITE.EXE file
was compressed "by PKLITE itself more than three times and once by
LZEXE." So, what we have here is a hack of a pirated commercial file -
jeez, this job gets confusing at times. ;-)

================================================================================
                                      OS/2
================================================================================

A short unofficial guide to the Netware Requester for OS/2 (2)

Now that you have the Requester installed, you will have two more
folders on your desktop. The Novell folder contains the installation
program, Netware Tools, Netware Target Service Agent, and NPRINTER.
We shall return to this folder after a little digression into the
  Network folder.

The Network folder will be more familiar to you in all probability.
When OS/2 has a network installed, the network gains an icon in the
Network folder. Since OS/2 supports multiple networks running side by
side (IBM LAN Server, Netware, MS LAN Manager), this is a useful
  feature.

Network->Netware presents objects for all recognised fileservers on
your network. Clicking on one will prompt you to log in, and then open
up to a folder containing all of the print queues and volumes
  available on that server.

If you use OS/2 applications, and are familiar with printer objects and
drive views, then just point yourself at this. You will not need to go
  any further.

In the Novell folder, the Netware TSA will probably not be of much use
to many, since it is only for Netware 4.0 fileservers. NPRINTER is
the remote printer agent (equivalent to RPRINTER). If you use
RPRINTER at all, I suggest that you crank up NPRINTER and be prepared
for another shock. If you don't use RPRINTER, don't bother confusing
yourself with NPRINTER at this stage. (-:

The install program you will have just been through. Since it sticks
around, you can use it to easily tweak your Netware for OS/2 as and
when you wish. Much better than DOS eh ?

Now if you want to map drives and capture printers, then there are
  three ways of doing this.

X You can use the Workplace Shell features to do this. With any
network volume there is an "Assign drive..." entry on the popup
menu. Similarly for all printer queue objects there is an "Assign
port..." entry on the popup menu. This is the Right Mouse Button,
     by the way.

The advantage of this is that WPS attempts to reconnect all
assigned drives and ports done this way AUTOMATICALLY when you
reboot. The disadvantage is that you need to be happy with using
the object-oriented interface. This may be yet another shock ... (-:

This is my preference of the three, BTW.

X You can use the Netware Tools program to do this. If you open a
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 22 16 Dub 1994

Printers and a Drives window, then investigation of the menu
options will soon yield results. There's nothing hard in there.

The advantage of this is that it most closely resembles the Windows
3.1 way of doing things. The disadvantage is that you have to
perform more tweaking to get settings to reload on reboot.

To save and restore settings, save a .NWS file. Then make a COPY
of the Network Tools object into the Startup folder (inside the
OS/2 System folder). Open the settings (RMB) for that object and
add the name of the .NWS file as a program parameter.

Other people swear by the Netware Tools.

X You can use the command-line netware utilities. I bet that you
thought that there weren't any! Wrong! (-: All of your old
friends SYSCON, MAP, LOGIN, SESSION, FILER et al. are available in
OS/2 versions. You may already have noticed MAP and LOGIN in your
     D:\NETWARE directory.

If you downloaded the requester, then you will have to hunt around
for the accompanying command-line utilities. IBM UK has them on
its BBS, so I should think that IBM US will have as well. If you
bought the requester, then they should be on the discs.

The advantage is that you will be most comforable with these. The
disadvatage is that there are very slight differences to the DOS
commands of the same name. Also, they feel incredibly clunky if
you start to become familiar with the Netware Tools or the WPS.

If you install the command line utilities, install LOGIN and SLIST in
SYS:LOGIN\OS2 and the public utilities in SYS:PUBLIC\OS2. This is
because by default L:\OS2 and P:\OS2 are on your PATH.

L: will be mapped to SYS:LOGIN when you are logged out, so L:\OS2 will
point to the OS/2 LOGIN.EXE. If you map P: to SYS:PUBLIC when you are
logged in, then P:\OS2 will find the OS/2 public utilties. Neat eh ?

One other note for the command line route. Your login scripts are
SYS:MAIL\userID\LOGIN.OS2 for the user login scripts and
SYS:PUBLIC\NET$LOG.OS2 for the system login scripts.

This is because the OS/2 login process differs from the DOS login
process. In particular, search drive mappings, COMSPEC, and DOS SET
are not available for OS/2 logins. None of which you should shed any
  tears over.

For DOS and Win-OS/2 there are further considerations ...

                    The OS/2 Data Communications Driver
Who does what? Is it important?

                               By Ray Gwinn

When you initiate a download or upload, what role does your
communications application program play? What role does an OS/2
communications device driver play? When your favorite BBS paints a
picture on your screen, how does the information reach the screen?
The roles of the OS/2 communications device driver and the
communications application program are misunderstood by many. I hope
to clear up some of the confusion by clarifying the function of the
OS/2 communications device driver in this article.

References below to "the driver" are referring to the OS/2
communications driver. In addition, this article ignores DOS and
WinOS/2 communications under OS/2 which is a related but separate
      subject.

The settings, buzz words, and tweaking options of data communications
are both bewildering and fascinating to users. Many will be
surprised to know that a standard OS/2 communications device driver
is modem ignorant (a major design flaw). This is why you perform any
modem configuration in the application program and not elsewhere such
as your CONFIG.SYS. The driver only passes a stream of data
characters to and from the application program. This means that the
driver is unaware of any upload or download protocol, such as ZMODEM.
Again, the upload and download protocols as well as screen painting
are completely implemented by the application program while the
driver is only passing a character stream. On the other hand, the
application program is unaware of the I/O port address and IRQ of the
communications port under OS/2 as the hardware is only accessed by
the driver. This is why an OS/2 communications program does not
(need not) ask for I/O address and IRQ of the communications port.

The OS/2 operating system provides a good environment (the best known
to the author) for data communications. The OS/2 communications
device driver provides a software interface between the applications
program and the communications hardware. The above statement "only
passing a character stream" is a tremendous understatement. The
communications device driver is probably the most complicated device
driver that any operating system may provide; and many operating
systems provide none at all (such as DOS). The communications driver
seems (to the author) to have innumerable tasks to perform and check.
The lowest level of the driver is the interrupt service routine. The
highest levels of the driver include processing commands from the
OS/2's kernel and command line processing at load time. The higher
levels also block (suspend) execution of the application program when
a received request cannot be satisfied. The interrupt levels usually
unblock the application when the operation can be (or has been)
satisfied. The driver also performs time critical functions that are
happening so fast that the application can not respond in time. An
example is handshaking of all types.

Fast interrupt response, short duration of interrupt service
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 24 16 Dub 1994

processing, and buffering of data are critical to the smooth
operation of a multi-tasking operating system like OS/2. Readers
should be aware that driving a modem at its maximum data rate is not
a good measure of the speed of a driver. Data rates over normal dial
up phone lines are now approaching 3000 characters per second.
Depending upon the installed hardware, this can mean as many as 3000
interrupts a second for communications alone. A high interrupt rate
and a poorly coded driver will bring a system to its knees by using
large amounts of processor time to service the interrupts. The time
required to service interrupts is often referred to as overhead or
processor overhead. The amount of processor overhead that a driver
places on the system is an important measure of the quality of that
driver. Overhead caused by DOS and Windows communications programs
are beyond the scope of this article.

For the on line, hooked in generation, the communications device
driver is one of the most important and most overlooked drivers on
their system. If it ever becomes a reality, the much acclaimed
Information Superhighway will only increase the importance of the
communications device driver. New technologies, like the COM-bic
UART developed by Hayes Microcomputer Products Inc., insure the data
communications hardware is ready for operating systems like OS/2 and
the future. Good device drivers for a given operating system,
written by experienced communications professionals are needed to
insure that software is also ready for the future.

OS2.GAMES December 8, 1993 Version 2.1a
------------------------------------------------------------

This file brings together in one place the information that you need to be
able to optimize the performance of your DOS based games. Unfortunately,
Much of the information still is incomplete, so your help would be greatly
appreciated. If you happen to know how to get a game working that isn't
listed, or how to get one working that's listed as not working, or even if
you know that a specific game doesn't work under OS/2 2.1, please mail
either me (schrock@egr.msu.edu) or Timur Tabi (timur@seas.gwu.edu) so we
can include the information.

If you are having problems getting a game to work, please feel free to
contact me (schrock@egr.msu.edu) and I'll do my best to help you out.

---------------------------------
FUTURE PLANS FOR THE LIST:

A .INF version will be made available sometime in the relatively near
future. Timur Tabi will be working on that. It will be posted when
ready.

I'm also going to be looking into the possibility of creating a database
for the migrate applications program to set the programs settings for
you.

---------------------------------
REPORTING CHANGES:

I'd really appreciate it if you would mail me any changes or additions
to this list. Some of the things that would be appreciated when you
do this are:
-Your system setup (things like sound card, IRQ's). This will help
me coordinate what works with what.
-The name of the file that you run to execute the game. I need this
to be able to set up a migration database.
-Please mail this information to schrock@egr.msu.edu

-------------------------------
GENERAL TIPS (READ THIS FIRST!):

Read the README file in your OS/2 root directory. Also, check the manual
for OS/2 2.1. Both of these provide information for running some DOS and
Windows apps under OS/2.

Read the comp.sys.ibm.pc.games FAQ. This is very important since it will
tell you about possible problems when running the game even under plain
DOS. If you can't find a copy of the FAQ in comp.sys.ibm.pc.games, email
Chris Warren, the keeper of the FAQ, at warren@apple.com for a copy. Also,
look to see if a game-specific FAQ is available. Several games have these
(Wolf3d, Civ, DOOM).

If you have trouble installing the game under OS/2 and you are trying to
install the game on a FAT drive, boot up plain DOS (via dual boot or the
Boot Manager) and install it there. Sometimes a game (or other app)
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 28 16 Dub 1994

won't install for some reason under OS/2, but once installed they'll
work fine under OS/2.

If you experiance strange anomalies or incompatibilities of any kind
(especially with older games), try booting a real copy of DOS from a
floppy inside a VDM running under OS/2 and run the game in that DOS
session. (See VMDISK in the Command Reference online docs for details.)
Some games that require keydisks will only work this way.

The following are the recommended base settings for running games under
OS/2. If you have a game not listed in here, try these out and work from
there to try to get it running.

Dos Fullscreen: Check this option; Very few DOS games perform well in a
        window.
DOS_BACKGROUND_EXECUTION: OFF
(so it won't take CPU time when you switch away from it, and
so you don't die while it's running in the background)
DOS_HIGH: ON (more memory for those games that need it)
DOS_RMSIZE: 640
DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT: 0 (most DOS games don't use DPMI memory)
EMS_MEMORY_LIMIT: 1024 (most games that use more than 640k use EMS
memory. If you're playing an earlier game, you might not need
this. Note also, many games may require more than this. Check
the box that it came in)
HW_ROM_TO_RAM: ON (copies ROM BIOS to RAM--several people have
said that this improves performance on their machines)
HW_TIMER: ON (very important, especially for games using soundcards)
IDLE_SECONDS: 10
IDLE_SENSITIVITY: 100 (very important)
KBD_ALTHOME_BYPASS: ON (although keep it off if you want to flip to
windowed, such as to check walkthroughs, etc)
VIDEO_FASTPASTE: ON (some people say this helps)
VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION: OFF (leaving this on can cause some games
to run far too fast, and other to run too slow)
VIDEO_ROM_EMULATION: OFF
XMS_MEMORY_LIMIT: 64 (needed for DOS=HIGH. If the game supports
XMS memory, naturally you should raise this)

For best performance close ALL windows and apps, especially other DOS
apps, before you run the game. Leaving other apps open steals CPU time
from the game, thus slowing it down. (Although it IS possible to do
high speed downloads while playing games, I don't recommend it)

Sometimes you just have to fiddle with the settings until it works
well for you, which is why this list is put together.

-------------------------------------------

SOUND CARDS:

Sounblaster cards: Somebody at Creative Labs decided that IRQ 7 should
be the default. If your computer has an LPT1: (it probably does),
you need to change the IRQ. I recommend IRQ 5, although it may
not be free depending on your configuration. Make sure you have
the BLASTER environment variable set, otherwise sounds might be
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 29 16 Dub 1994

    cut off funny.

Roland LAPC-1: the default IRQ2 and 330 base address work fine. IRQ 2 is
automatically mapped to IRQ9 on 386 and 486 computers.

Pro Audio Spectrun-16: Make sure your IRQ's are set to something that is
not used. Avoid 7,3,4 (I don't know what these cards can be set
to). IRQ 5,2, and 10 tend to be free. You can load the PAS16's
mvsound.sys by opening the DOS settings box, and adding a line
to the DOS_DEVICE bos, such as:

      c:\proaudio\mvsound.sys d:3 q:2

The path and the optional parameters will vary of course.

-----------------------------------------

SPECIFIC GAMES:

Start with the base settings that were listed above, making sure to
set EMS, XMS, and/or DPMI memory to what is specified for the game
you are running. The idea here is to list as many of the games
people are running as possible. If you are running a game, or
having problems with one, PLEASE mail me so it can be added to
the list (schrock@egr.msu.edu).

Please note: If a game is listed as 'runs fine,' then it was tested
by either the original maintainer of the list or by me (I do my best
to specify which this is). 'Reported to run fine' means that people on
the net have said that it runs.

7TH GUEST:
  -Alphabetized under 'S.'

ACES OF THE PACIFIC:
-Several people have reported this game to run fine.
-Also note, there is a patch you may need which increases
the screen update speed, so if the update speed is slow
on your system you might want to try to find it.

ALONE IN THE DARK:
-Reported to run fine. Make sure you set DOS_UMB and HW_NOSOUND
to off and HW_TIMER to on for the best sound production.

ATLANTIS:
  -Reported to run fine.

A-TRAIN:
-Several people say they have been able to get the game to
run in monocrome, with no sound. Nobody that I know of has
gotten it to run in color.

BATTLE CHESS:
  -Reported to run fine.

BIO-MENACE (Apogee):
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 30 16 Dub 1994

-Reported to run fine in a real DOS VDM.
-Start this game with the /LATCHPEL command line switch to reduce
   jerky graphics.

BREACH 2:
-One person has reported that he couldn't get the mouse to
work, so he had to use the keyboard instead.

CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN 3D:
-This game can be real picky. Do not switch away from a
session running this game, because it won't restore the
   screen right.
-If you have a SoundBlaster and your sounds are getting cut
off, check to make sure you are defining the BLASTER
   environment variable properly.
-I was able to get the registered version to run fine, but
the shareware one occaisionally would pause when I picked
   something up or got hit.
-If you can't get the game to start up due to a conflict with LPT2,
try starting the game with the /noss (undocumented parameter).
   (From Shawn Green, help@idsoftware.com)

CHUCK YEAGER'S AIR COMBAT:
-One user made the suggestion that when you are using the PC
speaker for sound to start the game and allow it to go through
the intro. Then do a test flight and hit a ^S to kill the sound.
This stops the sound for future sessions. If you want digitized
speech thereafter, you can turn it on during flights, but make
sure you turn it off before finishing a mission.

CIVILIZATION:
-Get the most recent version of the game. I believe this is
   now version 5.
-Always use fullscreen mode. (Tend to get divide by 0 errors
if you try running it in a window)
-Some people have had problems with running it in Adlib/Soundblaster
where the game runs slow. A possible solution is to start the game
in PC SPEAKER mode, quit, and run it again during the same DOS
session with the Adlib/SoundBlaster Support enabled. This might
fix that problem. (Note: I never had this problem with my
   SoundBlaster Pro)
-A possible solution to the divide by 0 errors is to turn COM_HOLD
to ON. I don't know that this works. Run it in fullscreen mode,
that works, and windowed the game runs far too slow.

COMMANCHE: MAXIMUM OVERKILL:
-This game tries to go into a protected mode, and I believe they
use the VCPI standard for that. As a result, it WILL NOT run.
-There have been rumors that if the makers hear enough interest
they will come out with a patch that will fix this (or a replacement
   executable, something along those lines).

COMMANDER KEEN 3:
  -Reported to run fine.

COMMANDER KEEN 4:
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 31 16 Dub 1994

-Reported to run fine, but you can't switch away from the session
or the screen will get messed up.

CONQUERED KINGDOMS:
-One person said they couldn't get it to run because the mouse
pointer gets lost. Anyone get this one to work?

CURSE OF THE AZURE BONDS:
  -Runs fine. (original maintainer)

DARKLANDS:
-Runs fine. If the into runs jerky, you can try turning your
VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION to ON (normally it should be set OFF
for this game, so make sure once you've seen the intro you
quit and change this setting back) Note: I thought the intro
was slow whatever I did. I've never seen the game under DOS,
so I don't know how it is normally.
-Make sure you get the most recent version, which at this time
is Version 7. I had problems running earlier versions.

DARKSEED:
-The copy protection wants to do something 'illegal' to the
a: drive, and OS/2 catches it and stops it.
  -A couple of possible solutions:
-There are a couple of cracks for this game, you could try
one of these to see if it removes this check.
-A user said he managed to get it to run by booting a real
version of DOS under OS/2, but that the digitized sounds
     need to be switched off.

DAY OF THE TENTACLE:
  -Reported to run fine.

DRACULA UNLEASHED:
-Uses a proprietary memory manager. In other words, it doesn't work.

DRAGON WARS:
  -Runs fine (original maintainer).

DRAKKEN:
-One user reports that this game runs, but it crashes often with
a contact your IBM rep message. Note, this was probably under the
BETA of OS/2 2.1, so it MAY be fixed. (Anyone know?)

DUNE II:
  -Reported to run fine.
-One user did have a problem where it would eventually hang after
first losing the Soundblaster sound, and another user also said
he couldn't get the digitized sounds working correctly either.

ELF:
-According to one user, there are problems with this game.
-Wasn't that specific? Anyone know more?

EL-FISH:
-Works with a few quirks. Will not render (animate) fish in the
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 32 16 Dub 1994

background. Causes a DOS session crash after exiting (But you were
closing the session anyways, so isn't too serious).

ELFLAND (ver 1.1):
-Reported to run fine, except you can't switch away from the
game (traditional screen messed up problem).

EPIC PINBALL:
  -See "Silverball."

ERIC THE UNREADY:
-The original maintainer of the list has this to say:
This game crashed about a dozen times during play. OS/2
reported several reasons for the crash, including trying to
access a nonexistant FPU and trying to issue a command that's
not supported by the 386 instruction set. I didn't try
runnning it under a real copy of DOS booted in a VDM. I
got the settings to a point where the last half of the game
wend without a single crash; These settings were:

     COM_HOLD: ON
     DOS_HIGH: OFF
     DOS_UMB: OFF
     DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT: 0
     EMS_MEMORY_LIMIT: 0
     HW_ROM_TO_RAM: ON
     HW_TIMER: ON
     IDLE_SECONDS: 30
     IDLE_SENSITIVITY: 100
     VIDEO_FASTPASTE: ON
     VIDEO_ONDEMAND_MEMORY: ON
     VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION: OFF
     VIDEO_SWITCH_NOTIFICATION: ON
     XMS_MEMORY_LIMIT: 0

I ran the game in regular VGA mode. Crashing seemed
to happen while music was changing themes.
INT_DURING_IO seemed to have no effect. The music
and digitized sounds & voices worked superbly under OS/2
     (except for the crashing).

ETERNAM:
  -Reported to run fine.

EYE OF THE BEHOLDER I:
  -Runs fine (original maintainer).

EYE OF THE BEHOLDER II:
  -Reported to run fine.

EYE OF THE BEHOLDER III:
-Moving the IRQ on a SB card from 5/7 to 10 supposedly fixes a sound
problem, although many games do not work with the IRQ set to 10.

F15:
-One user said that the key disk protection caused OS/2 to
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 33 16 Dub 1994

generate an illegal instruction. Booting real DOS in a VDM
   didn't help.

F15 STRIKE EAGLE 3:
-Reported to run fine by several people (DOS_UMB to OFF, and
give the game at least 64k XMS and several MB EMS).

F17:
  -Reported to run fine.

FALCON 3.0:
-First step is to make sure you have the latest revision level.
I believe this is level 'D'.
-There have been several reports of a sound error when it tries
to read sound.bnk (I had this error). The solution is supposedly
to delete sound.bnk, then go into the CONFIG screen and reenable
the sound. This will produce sound, but the voice you hear will be
messed up. One person believes this to be an HPFS problem, as when
he installed on a FAT partition the problem wasn't there, but when
he moved it to an HPFS partition the problem occurred.
-I never managed to get the game to work (I gave up). I had the
sound.bnk problem, but the above solution did not work for me.

FORGOTTEN REALMS UNLIMITED ADVENTURES (SSI):
-If running with a SB type card, it runs for a while and then locks
up. Turning off sound is supposed to fix this.

FORMULA 1 GP:
-Works, but if you add the ftp'able upgrade to add head-to-head modem
support you can't do head-to-head. It supposedly won't access the
   modem under OS/2.

FPS FOOTBALL:
-Reported to run, but was a little jerky. This might be fixable
   by fiddling with the settings.

FPS FOOTBALL PRO:
-Hangs or bizzarre crashes when using the Soundblaster. Select Adlib
sound by using the -A option to get by this.

GALACTIX:
-Reported to run fine, though the person said his joystick (a Gravis
Gamepad hooked to a Soundblaster Pro port) tended to lose sync and
   would drift.

GLOBAL DILEMMA:
  -One user reported the following:
"Well, here's one for the 'better DOS than DOS department: I just
noticed that 'Global Dilemma', which ran just fine on my Compaq 386,
won't run on my new 486; the AMI Bios doesn't seem to like the way
the game addresses the keyboard. That's under real DOS-5. In a DOS
task under OS/2 it runs just fine."

Question: How can I set up OS/2 for Windows for HPFS only?

Details of Question:

User has OS/2 For Windows and would like to set up the system
     for HPFS only.

Answer Summary:

The issue is that in order to enable Windows application
support under OS/2 for Windows, real Microsoft Windows 3.1 must
be installed. Windows 3.1 will not install under OS/2, only
DOS. Since DOS cannot see or access HPFS drives, the problem
is how to get Windows 3.1 on an HPFS drive.

The user can install DOS and Windows, back up the Windows code
to diskettes, install OS/2 for Windows, then restore the
Windows code from diskettes, then use selective install from
OS/2 to add the Windows application support.

NOTE: IBM cannot authorize you to make a backup copy of non-IBM
supplied code. If you wish to use this method, you are responsible
for ensuring you have the right to make a backup copy of Windows 3.1.
If you are unsure, please consult your license agreement for the
     product or contact the vendor.

Detailed Answer:

     1. Make sure your system has DOS and Windows 3.1 on it.

     2. Back up to diskette the subdirectory(ies) that contain the
Windows code only. There is no need to back up the DOS code,
since you will not need it in this all-HPFS configuration.
PLEASE REFER TO THE NOTE ABOVE.

     3. Install OS/2 for Windows, choosing to reformat the partition
         with HPFS.

DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 35 16 Dub 1994

     4. Create the appropriate directory on the target drive, and
restore the Windows 3.1 code from diskettes.

     5. Open the OS/2 System folder, then the System Setup folder,
         and start Selective Install.

     6. Follow the steps to install Windows application support.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: After installing OS/2 for Windows, the mouse does
                 not work at all.

Details of Question:

User installed OS/2 for Windows. After rebooting the system,
the mouse does not work. When booting to DOS, the mouse works
     fine.

Answer Summary:

Sometimes if there is a DOS-based mouse device driver
installed, the OS/2 mouse device driver does not get copied
over. The solution is to unpack and copy over the OS/2 mouse
     device driver.

Detailed Answer:

The OS/2 mouse device driver can be found on diskette 1 of the
     installation package.

     1. Copy the file MOUSE.SYS from the installation diskette 1 to
the \OS2 directory on the boot drive.

     2. The line containing MOUSE.SYS should be in the OS/2
CONFIG.SYS file. In any case, you will need to reboot
the system for the device driver change to take effect. If
it is not, use selective install to reinstall the mouse
         device driver support.

         a. Open the OS/2 System folder, then the System Setup
folder, then open the Selective Install item.

         b. The first screen will indicate mouse support. Select
the one appropriate for the user's hardware and select
the OK pushbutton, then select the Install pushbutton
and let the mouse device support reinstall itself.

         c. You must reboot the system for this change to take
             effect.

OS/2 only, with no DOS and Windows?

Description: User wants to install OS/2 for Windows, but remove
DOS from their system and just run OS/2 and Windows
                3.1 applications.

Answer Summary:

The answer to this is to install OS/2 for Windows, then remove
DOS and its related files from the hard disk.

Detials of Resolution:

     1. Assuming you have DOS and Windows 3.1 installed, install
OS/2 for Windows, choosing the options you wish, and
choosing to NOT reformat the partition.

     2. When you are finished, you will have a system that boots DOS
as well as OS/2. Make sure you are booted to OS/2.

     3. In the OS/2 subdirectory, there is a file called BOOT.COM.
Delete it. You have now just remove the ability to boot back
to DOS. If you want to retain the ability to reenable it,
you can rename the file to something like BOOT.BAK.

     4. If you truly do not ever want to boot this machine to
DOS again, you can remove the \DOS subdirectory and the
         CONFIG.DOS files from your system.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: Can I use the High Performance File System (HPFS)
           with OS/2 for Windows?

Description: User would like to use OS/2 for Windows, but still be
able to use the High Performance File System.

Answer Summary:

This configuration is fine, but the user will not be able to
put HPFS on the boot partition. Refer to PDDB 1111111 on how to
     set up this configuration.

Detailed Answer:

In general, OS/2 for Windows systems are designed to be dual
boot systems, allowing the user to boot both DOS and OS/2 from
the same partition. In fact, this is how the default
installation prepares the system. Since DOS cannot access HPFS
drives, this boot drive will remain a FAT formatted drive.
However, this does not preclude a user from formatting other
HPFS drives on the system. The user must just be aware that
when they are booted under DOS, those HPFS formatter partitions
     will not be visible.

     The user would:

would choose to install HPFS support.

     2. For any drives to be formatted HPFS, the user would issue
         the command:

         FORMAT X: /fs:HPFS

There X is the drive to be formatted.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question: Can I install OS/2 for Windows without Windows
           3.1?

Details of Question:

User would like to use OS/2 for Windows, but without Windows
application support and they do not have Microsoft Windows 3.1.

Answer Summary:

No problem. Just install OS/2 for Windows.

Detailed Answer:

Anyone can use OS/2 for Windows, even without Windows 3.1. The
user would install OS/2 for Windows, choosing to format or not
to format the partition as (s)he desires.

The only caveat to this is that Winsdows applications will not
run on this system. DOS applications, however will run if the
user chose to install DOS application support.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question: I want to install OS/2 for Windows but add the
support for Windows applications later. Can I do
           this?

Details of Question:

User would like to install OS/2 for Windows, but is unsure if
they want Windows application support. Can this support be
     installed later?

Answer Summary:

     Yes.

Detailed Answer:

This configuration is not a problm as long as the user
     understands several basic items.

     1. Windows support under OS/2 for Windows can only be installed
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 38 16 Dub 1994

if Windows 3.1 is on the hard disk.

     2. Windows 3.1 will NOT install under OS/2. The system must be
booted under DOS in order to install Windows 3.1.

     3. DOS cannot see nor access HPFS partitions.

The idea here is that WIndows 3.1 must be on the hard disk to
tell OS/2 for Windows to install Windows support. Therefore,
DOS is needed to install Windows 3.1 on the hard disk. If the
OS/2 for Windows system was created HPFS only, then this will
not be possible, since DOS cannot access HPFS partitions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: Will Windows VxDs (Virtual Device Drivers) run
          on OS/2 for Windows.

Details of Question:

The user wants to know that since OS/2 for Windows uses real
Microsoft Windows 3.1 code, will OS/2 for WIndows allow the use
of VxDs that are require by some Windows applications?

Answer Summary:

     The answer is no.

Detailed Answer:

OS/2 for WIndows will not run applications requiring VxDs in
Windows running under OS/2. However, since OS/2 for Windows
creates by default, a dual-boot system where users can boot to
DOS and Windows, these applications requiring VxDs can run in
that environment is the user has set it up that way.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: What is OS/2 for WIndows and why should I get it?

Details of Question:

The user wants to know what the purpose of OS/2 for Windows is
and why someone would want it instead of a regular OS/2
     package.

Answer Summary:

OS/2 for Windows is just a repackaged copy of OS/2, without the
Windows application support built in. It uses a user's existing
copy of Windows 3.1 to run Windows applications.

Detailed Answer:

DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 39 16 Dub 1994

OS/2 for Windows is designed for the users of DOS and Windows
     who would like:

     1. A lower-cost upgrade to OS/2

     2. To still be able to run their DOS and Windows applications
under either OS/2 or DOS and Windows, retaining their
current copy and configuration of WIndows 3.1

     3. #2 above, and do it in less disk space then having a full
copy of OS/2 and Windows on the hard disk.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: What applications will run under OS/2 for Windows?

Details of Question:

The user wants to know what applications will run under OS/2
for Windows as opposed to a standard copy of OS/2.

Answer Summary:

If a user installs the Windows application support under
OS/2 for Windows, than any application (DOS, Windows or OS/2)
that runs under OS/2 2.1 will run on OS/2 2.1 for Windows.

Detailed Answer:

Assuming the user has a configuration with all the proper
options selected (and features etc), anything that runs on OS/2
2.1 will run on OS/2 2.1 for Windows. If it does not, then it
is considered a bug and an APAR should be opened.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: I have Windows 3.1. It was installed from a CD-ROM.
When I install OS/2 for Windows, it tries to find
disk #7 on the CD. It is not there. How can I fix
           this?

Details of Question:

User installed Windows from a CD-ROM. During the installation
of OS/2 for Windows, OS/2 asks for the Windows diskettes, but
is treating the images on the CD as 5.25 inch images, where
there are 7 diskettes. There is no 7th image on the CD.

Answer Summary:

The user will either have to obtain a diskette #7, or fake out
     the installation program.

Detailed Answer:
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 40 16 Dub 1994

There are 3 possibilities to fixing this situation:

     1. Obtain a Windows 5.25 inch diskette #7.

     2. Install Windows 3.1 from a floppy disk. Then use the
floppies during OS/2 for WIndows installation.

     3. Create a "fake" diskette #7. This can be done by:

        a. Format a blank 5.25 inch diskette.
        b. Use the LABEL program to label it DISK7, according to
            the Microsoft Windows diskette labels.
        c. Copy the files from diskette 6 from the CD to this
diskette and use it when the installation program asks
            for diskette #7.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question: Will OS/2 for Windows work with Windows for
Workgroups, or other flavors of Windows 3.1?

Details of Question:

User would like to use OS/2 for Windows on other than
     "plain vanilla" Windows 3.1

Answer Summary:

Only the standard Windows 3.1 package has been
certified to run with OS/2 for Windows.

Detailed Answer:

While you may be able to get some, or possibly all functions
of other "flavors" of Windows 3.1 to work with OS/2 for
Windows, IBM cannot support those configurations at this
time. Only Windows 3.1 is fully supported by IBM.

TITLE :Troubleshooting MS Backup and MS Backup for Windows

--------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft MS-DOS operating system version 6.0
 - Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.0, 3.0a, and 3.1
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary:

If you encounter problems running Microsoft Backup for MS-DOS or Microsoft
Backup for Windows, use the steps in the following section to correct the
problems.

Common problems caused by incorrect system configuration include:

 - Microsoft Backup appears to stop responding (hang) when run from the
   MS-DOS Prompt under Windows.

 - Microsoft Backup reports problems accessing the second floppy disk
drive during the compatibility test when run from MS-DOS Prompt under
Windows. Microsoft Backup either displays the following error message or
continues to ask for the first disk after you have inserted the second
   one.

      Diskette not properly seated.

 - Microsoft Backup for Windows causes Windows to close, leaving the
command prompt displayed on the screen.

 - Windows reports that the DMA buffer size needs to be increased to 64.

Troubleshooting Microsoft Backup for Windows and Microsoft Backup
-----------------------------------------------------------------

1. Microsoft does not recommend or support running the MS-DOS-based
version of Microsoft Backup (MSBACKUP.EXE) with Windows. If you choose
to do this, you should create a program information file (PIF) for
Microsoft Backup with the following settings:

       Display Usage: Full Screen
       Execution: Exclusive

2. Your CONFIG.SYS file should include the following settings (the values
   shown are minimums):

       FILES=30
       BUFFERS=30
       STACKS=9,256
DA(m)N NEWS 2-09 Str. 42 16 Dub 1994

3. The DMABufferSize= line should be set to at least 32 in the [386Enh]
   section of the SYSTEM.INI file.
