=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Sun Oct 10 22:11:04 1999

        *** NitroTRM has joined #demojournal

        <NitroTRM> hi ho silver

<|ps|> so who are you? :)

        <NitroTRM> Hi, I'm Nitro, musician and a beginner-level
3d-graphician My real name is Kai-Eerik Komppa. I live in
                   Helsinki, Finland

<|ps|> and what do you do on real life?

<NitroTRM> I work too much :) I am enrolled nurse (now this is real)
which is my dayjob, and I have a few music-related project
going on for the rest of my time. For example, I have now
a project of arranging and producing a music of one
promising female singer, Teque/Trauma has also his hands
                   in it too..

        <|ps|> trauma.. what's it's story? :)

<NitroTRM> Whoo.. to make it short.. Trauma was formed from three
groups (Hysteria & Dee & Dubius) because all members knew
each other and had several co-ops going on all the time..
so we just decided to "join forces".. I think it was a
right thing to do. Nowadays we all have something to do
with computers on real life too, therefore our
productivity is a bit slow etc. Personally, having a
dayjob of all different trade, I can do more.. that's why
I joined. that's actually very recent (joining that is:))

<|ps|> when did you first started into computers?

<NitroTRM> uuuh.. back in -82 my brother and I had a shared present,
in xmas I think, it was a Sinclair Spectrum 48k.. cool
gear! I even coded on it then :-) I think that there is
still even a Spectrum-scene alive today, really

        <|ps|> there is?

<NitroTRM> Yeah.. my brother claimed he found some demos on web that
run with an emulator.. I haven't seen em tho:)

<|ps|> i heard you recently joined kooma?

<NitroTRM> yeah, I have been hanging around with Los/kooma and he
was designing a demo, but had no music.. and for some
reason he asked if I'm interested in composing for that..
and since even Virne liked my tune, I thought that what
the hell, if I'm good enough for them, I want to join
since Trauma is really on/off group nowadays because all
the other members are pro's with computers.. or
something :) ..and, to make it clear, I applied to join,
                   they didn't ask me :-)

<|ps|> hehe :) so what are your plans scene wise for the future?

<NitroTRM> Oh.. I still want to make music, and if I manage to
develop my skills further on 3d, I'll be doing that too..
I have a secret (shhh) dream that I'll get to bigscreen
one day in animationcompo, having my own soundtrack in
it:) No really I am pretty serious on this 3d right now

<|ps|> lets talk music... what do you use to make your music?

        <NitroTRM> I have some gear.. Korg X3, Yamaha cs1x, Yamaha TG55 as
synths, then some fx-processors and a 20-channel mixer..
When I do trackermusic, I use good 'ol FT2. I never got
excited on IT, since I allready used synths when IT got
superior.. and believe me, using synths and other
midi-gear is better way than any tracker.

<|ps|> for how long have you been composing now?

<NitroTRM> My first releaseable tunes got out on -91 I think.. ..but
there was a dramatic improvement on -95 when I got my
                   first synth:-)
Oh, btw I recently also got in traxinspace so now
there's _some_ place for me to put my mp3's whenever I
got something to release:-) (there's 1 now, but I'll
                   upload more)

<|ps|> nitro: woho! why didnt you get an homepage before?

<NitroTRM> oh, it's not a homepage even:-) just an account on that
community in web (www.traxinspace.com).. I have been
inactive with it just simply because I'm lazy and I
haven't had so much fate in my material that it should be
so much released.. or something (I'm repeating myself:))

<|ps|> anyways, what are your inspirations for your tracks?

<NitroTRM> lots of things.. some tracks born out of random "jamming"
with keyboards, if I get a nice chords (by mistake
usually:)).. then sometimes I get my hands on a pile of
great samples that inspire.. or sometimes I just have a
clear vision of a tune or a part of a tune
for example soundtrack on machines of madness was
entirely created on the long resonation-sound playing on
it all the time.. I just thought that a long rez would be
                   cool:-)

<|ps|> :) are you ready for demojournal top quiz show contest?

<NitroTRM> never more! That's not, but I think that you can not be
                   less interested!:-) Shoot me!

<|ps|> 1. whats your favorite color?

        <NitroTRM> balck
                   black even:)

<|ps|> 2. whats the capital of mexico?

        <NitroTRM> Mexico-tequila-city!

<|ps|> 3. whats is the speed of light?

<NitroTRM> certainly enough. Really. I mean it.

<|ps|> 4. whats your favorite book and movie of all times?

<NitroTRM> hmm.. book would be Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy and
                   movie is...movie .. hmm.. can I name 4? no? then it's
                   "Big Lebowski".

        <|ps|> you can name 4

        <NitroTRM> B.L., Rosemary's Nightmare, Matrix, Star Wars

<|ps|> 5. if you died and got ressurec, what animal would you like
               to be?

<NitroTRM> this is easy.. of course An Ass!

        <|ps|> i said an animal..

<NitroTRM> it IS an animal:) no really.. I would be a locust. I like
                   to be in a croud:)

<|ps|> do you have a pet?

<NitroTRM> no. I have had guinea-pigs in "a previous life", but
nowadays, living single, I can't have any. I'm never home
                   etc.. you know

<|ps|> what parties did you ever attended? which ones were the best
               and worst?

<NitroTRM> I have attended on every assembly since '94 ..then I have
been on TP5, but, being busy _and_ lazy bastard, that's
about it. I liked TP or asm95 best, but I did not enjoy
last asm too much.. maybe because we ruined our demo on
the last moment:-) _and_ because there were no enough
                   tickets, damn it:)

<|ps|> how was last asm? you got 2nd on 3d acc

<NitroTRM> yeah, well, the new partyplace is cool. There's all the
positive things I have to say about it..:-) No really,
most people seemed to have a great time there.. I'm still
a bit sad about a few technical things that made our demo
to look-not-so-good:).. 2nd, well, it was nice, I think
that we have some "fans" here that voted us.. and Teque's
& !Cube's soundtrack was great on that demo.

<|ps|> im running out of questions now.. :) you have anything to say
               to your fans?

<NitroTRM> Hey! Is there any!:-) In future, from time to time, check
out traxinspace for my new tunes. Do not hesitate to
contact if you want me to make music for _your_ demo,
there's allways room for atleast conversation on that
                   subject. Have a happy life!

<|ps|> ok.. drop your mail :)
your mail not your pants you sick pervert!

<NitroTRM> uh. Use my hotmail, I'll check it once a week.
kaitsu5@hotmail.com. Other contact info also available at
                   http://sauna.net/trauma
                   wow :)

<|ps|> well.. thank you so much for your time nitro :)

        <NitroTRM> don't mention it. I think that you're a great man for
scene, keeping us alive. I'm your fan! :)

<|ps|> wow its when i hear comments like these that i realize why i
didnt stopped demoj yet.. :D [editor: :~)]

        Session Close: Sun Oct 10 23:25:53 1999

=====! demo !==================================================================

        Chained by Agravedict (party-version)
        Found at www.scene.org (Horizon'99/demo/01.rar)
        1st place at Horizon'99

        System requirements:
(An info-file WITH requirements! The crowd goes wild!)
Required: Pentium+MMX, 16 MB RAM, 3 MB HD, Vesa2 with LFB
Recommended: P225, 32MB RAM, DOS (but works with Win)
I'm not sure which musicplayer they used, but it supports SB clones.

        The demo:
Chained is mainly a 3D-demo. The biggest part is a long ride over
        a very detailed PC-motherboard. It's a strange combination of
flat & phongshaded objects, with & without textures, existing &
imaginary components. It's original, f.e. the greetings are visible
on secondary chips, but it lasts too long. Sometimes it's better to
reveal only brief glimpses instead of a long showoff, so the watcher
wants to see it again, rather then becoming bored. A second 3D-world
shows us the room of a lone scener, and bestows upon us a Message.
I'm not fond of Messages (notice the capital), but the
demoscene-objects made me smile (deja vu, who hasn't some scene
books & CDs in his/her room?). Non-standard 3D is at the start of
the demo, during the credits, when a nice real-time raytrace-engine
kicks in. It shows some balls floating in a cylindrical room, with
walls, ceiling, floor and balls all mirroring. It's slightly blurred
(2*2 blocks), but looks good enough to make me wish there was another
ray-scene in the demo. 2D-effects are few and simple, like fading
letters, a colorful horizontal blur and an extremely simple
water-reflection (sinus-wobbling, yawn). Regarding graphics, two
handdrawn logos (Agravedict & Chained) with an oldschool feel give
the demo a kick-start, the first is very nice & colorful, the second
is a bit flat-colored. Further there are a few poster-textures in
the 3D-room, and a mediocre landscape. And hey! An ANSI-endscreen!
That's been a long time. Hope some groups follow the example.
The music reminds me of my inability to categorize music :) Something
between standard demo music & dnb ? Anyway, it's not bad, but could
use more variation, maybe a second theme and/or a clear lead. Now
it's just the same theme with a few slower breaks.

        Worth the download ?
WARNING: some people say I'm overly positive on newbie-demos and
nit picking on "big" demos. That's true :). It's because I expect
more from famous groups, and their demos will get downloaded anyway,
while smaller groups may need some advertising. If you think that's
unfair, keep it in mind while reading my reviews, or write your own
100% objective ones and send them to our grateful editor.
That said, Chained is Agravedicts first demo :) OK, they've made
several VHS-demos and a few intros, but it's their first PC-demo.
        In short:
        Good points:
        - Raytracing (My favorite effect, it's the future)
        - Pixeled logos
        - Some original ideas (main good point of many new groups)
        - Low requirements
        Bad points:
        - Bad timing (3D too long, first logo too short)
        - Old effects
        - Overall quality could be higher (music, pictures, design)
So decide yourself, I didn't regret downloading it.
                                                                        Seven

=====! intro !=================================================================

        Bakkslide 7 by hellcore+omnicolor
        1st place at takeover99

Mrock asked me why didn't i ever reviewed bakkslide 7.. and well..
i simply had forgotten about it and dlee never picked it up for a
review so here it comes now. :)
This is one of the best intros ever! Heavy on design and feeling,
it goes with hi-res greyscalled weird effects synced deeply with an
awesome soundtrack by yeks/omnicolor.. It's really hard to describe
this intro, it's easier seen then explained.. imagine a te-2rb on
intro with some deep words scattered around and thats the closest
definition of bakkslide7 i can give you.
I'm sorry this is short but i'm really not cut out for reviews :P
                                                                           ps

=====! music !=================================================================

	"Hold", "Four steps to emptiness"
	Aisth
	www.aisth.com (7MB)

Aisth offers three demo songs on their homepage. First one
is "Box" which was 3rd at Assembly'99 in mp3 competition and
which was reviewed here already. [ed: wasnt box 2nd? at asm?]
Another two songs are "Hold" and "Four steps to emptiness"
and they prove experimental sound of Aisth's music, where the
most important instrument is human voice. All other instruments
are secondary, only drums remain. They don't have a tight place
or form and melody often changes in strange ways. Song may
start in classical way, but since beginning you'll hear
secondary melodies moving in strange ways and slowly eating up
whole song. Interesting is that this songs won't leave in you
a feeling of electronical music. Even when there's a lot of
inluences from various styles and a lot of synth- instruments,
songs sound naturally. It isn't too much catchy, something
that would you exactly remember, but it sounds interesting
and it's worth listening - so go on. Both songs are in mp3
format, first one is 4megs big, second one is 3 megs big.

[editor: in case you dont know, and you should by now couz ive
already written it like 3 or 4 times before! aisth is
jugi/complex + alison (that voice you can hear singing)
they recently won the bornonthewww compo and as a reward
they got shitloads of studio time and went play life
at Los Angeles at the prize ceremony.. There is a cam
session of their performance... damn.. i need to go find my
                 mails.. wait!
                 http://vote.artistdirect.com/adoma/webcast/webcast.html
here we go... the thing is 2 hours big and aisth were
some of the last to play (i havent checked myself.. no
bandwidth to get more then 5 seconds stream) so fastforward
                 to see them :)]

	Haux EP
	Stereoman
	www.noisemusic.org (7,5MB)

If you didn't like stereoman's electronical-only excesses like
Lurc and other, you'll be pleased with this one. This release is
more similar to his older works (which I liked more). Again long
ambient sounds, this time combined with more electronical
instruments which remained from his last works, but they aren't
used that often. EP consists of two songs - "Dreamborder" and
"rfip (vik)" which are offered separately, so you don't have to
download whole 7MB, if you just want to know what it's about. Only
if it wouldn't be in mp3 format.
                                                                       tryhuk

favourite graphician is still Das of Shock! (lately Chrome)
Why doesn't anyone know him? Why is he still unreachable via
e-mail, IRC, or any other way? It seems that only one man knows the
secret: Atx of Chrome. (And maybe me. :)
I try now to tell the story of Das, and after that there will still
        be unanswered questions are comming.
Das... in the past, he was the ONE. (Not Neo. ;)) The only one
quality graphician of Hungary. He came from the dust, and now away
in the dawn... There was no Xtro (Filler), Enok, Blackhand, Warpig
or Inferno at that time. Rack/Majic12 was the only one and REAL
hungarian concurent of the mighty Das/Absolute! Yes, you understand
right, he isn't from our nice country, he is from Finland! Atx met
him at Assembly 1994, when some of the hungarian fellows, and groups
were present at the party. (groups like: Phantom Design - later
Shock! or the last placed demos creator Damons - later Mandula
[uhh. Rod will kill me. ;)]) And Atx met a dissapointed and
disqualified graphician... he was Das of Absolute PC. His picture
wasn't selected for the top 15. But they changed snail mail adresses,
and become good friends. They sent Xmas cards to eachother too, love,
peace and unity. UNITY! Phantom Design hadn't got a good graphician.
Atx was in one group (Absolute PC) with Das. And these people made a
historical moment: Shock! - hungary's best known, and most active
group born! Great victories have come in several graphic
competitions, and lot of good demos ... that was the marriage with
Das/Atx and Shock. But one thing never changed, only Atx had the
contact with the superb graphician. Even other Shock members didn't
knew him. Lot of good rankings, and nobody knew him? The first rumors
started then. Some of the hungarian sceners still think that Das is
hungarian, and he is Atx's dad! Well if you check in the phone book
of Budapest, you can see next to Atx's father the profession:
painter-graphician. He really made that "cheat" that a professional
entered an amateur competition? I think not. But who knows? ;)
Naturally some sceners have seen the real oil versions of Das's art
in Budapest's X and Y Gallery. But they were just envious, and talked
crap. And when Shock ended up carreer, Das followed Atx to his new
group: Chrome, showed his last picture in the demo "Plastik" and
after that nobody heard anything from him again.
Atx told me that Das ended school, and after his final exams he is
painting, and illustrating books. They haven't contacted since 1996
autumn. No postcard, no phonecalls, nothing.
But i know the real(?) snailmail adress of Jussi Kaakinen. (Thats
his real name.) Because i hope that Das will work on the "Berlin"
demoproject too, and after much-much talk Atx finally gave me the
adress of Das. But i will not share it with you. I promised.
(Maybe i'll force Droid/Haujobb to meet him one time, and talk
realtime about the demo, because i think that just an invitation
        on paper isn't enough...)

          Now the interresting question:
Ok, he lives in Finland... I talked with much .fi sceners, and
they were really wondering when i said that he is from Finland...
Why wasn't he never on a .fi party (except(?) Assembly '94)?!?
Why entered he his pics every time ONLY with Atx?!? (means, only
hungarian parties, + the party 96.) And we could ask some more
        questions...

If anyone of you dear demojournal readers know some other facts,
or ever met Das personally please write back! (Hahho .fi readers!
        I hope you know something...)
Was ist das? DAS. MOST WANTED. $1000 ;)
Btw. did you know that Finns and Hungarians were one nation
in the past? Maybe we must find the answer here...
                                                                        d-lee
