        Session Start: Wed Nov 10 00:06:17 1999

        *** baloo has joined #demojournal

<|ps|> hello mr.baloo sir! :) so who are you? :)

<baloo> i am baloo. coding and designing in the multimedia group
replay. i am also in the swedish group blocc, in blocc i'm
                doing graphics.

        <|ps|> who is replay?

        <baloo> who is replay?

<|ps|> yes, who is replay? :)

<baloo> it is a group. therefor it can't be a person. and not a who.
even tho there used to be someone in the scene formerly
known as replay, and if you'll search the hornet archive.
you'll find some tunes from him.
there's also an hungarian c64 group called replay.

        <|ps|> what is replay?

        <baloo> that's more like it.

<baloo> Replay is a swedish demogroup, founded by me and roger,
formerly known as goofy. we're making this demonstrations,
and compete with other multimedia groups on so called
demoparties. :) let's say that we're more intresting in
design then in optimizing our code.

        <|ps|> What's the secret behind replay's design?

<baloo> Nothing, really, we do what we like, what we like in other
demos, what we see on tv, and ofcourse those things that we
                are able to do.

<|ps|> where do you get the inspiration for that design then? :)

<baloo> I'd say, mostly other demos, but we always try to make
                something that fits the soundtrack.

<|ps|> you started off pixelling and ended up coding, how did that
               happen?

<baloo> first of all, i got interested in coding.. and the more i
coded, the less i felt like pixeling, i pixel sometimes now
aswell. but it takes so damn long time. :)

<|ps|> what is more rewarding? coding or pixeling?

<baloo> coding, and it's hopefully easier to get a job as a
                programmer :)

<|ps|> why is it more rewarding to code then?

<baloo> i learn something. pixeling is more natural talent. even tho
some people have easier to code then others. maybe i'm more
                this kind of person.

<|ps|> what software do you use to pixel?

        <baloo> dp2e and photoshop.

<|ps|> did you started with those since begining or changed to them?

<baloo> i started with dp2e, and when i got too lazy, i started to
                use photshop

<|ps|> when did you first started off with computers?

<baloo> my tenth birthday. my father bought me an atari 520stfm

<|ps|> you been interested in atari scene too?

        <baloo> no

<|ps|> tells us what happened then

        <baloo> sure..
i got involved in the scene, when i had my atari, and roger
owned a amiga 500, he got some demos, and i tried to get
some for atari. i succeded in getting 2 or so :) well, just
after that i bought my first pc. a 286, changed it to a 386
just after that, and i got involved in the mailswapping
scene, my first contact was actually steffo/cryonics whom i
got in contact with after i placed an ad in a swedish
computer magazine. I roger and he formed my first group,
                e-fect.

        <|ps|> what happened to e-fect? :)

<baloo> oh, let me try to remember.. this was something like 96 or
so.. i think that we all just left the group.. sometime
after that i roger formed our own group, taste. We had that
group for half a year or so before we joined a Swedish group
called Nail. We merged with another Swedish group and formed
Loop. In Loop we released one thing. A 64k intro at TP6.
Just some time after that all "Nail" members of Loop left.
I joined Blocc sometime in spring 97. Me and Roger formed
our new team with a friend of ours called Coin just after
                that. That group is Replay.

<|ps|> what was your first demoparty? do you recall?

        <baloo> oh yes. Remedy'95

        <|ps|> how was it? :)

        <baloo> I don't recall much of it :)

<|ps|> what do you recall? :)

<baloo> I remember that i was really impressed by all the demos
there. There where loads of demoscene people there. No one
played games. almost :) I remember that i saw Lizard King
                there. And the Omicron crew.

<|ps|> how was it compared to 99's remedy?

<baloo> Hmm. noidea. this was the only remedy i've been to.

        <|ps|> why? :)

<baloo> Remedy 95 was in the autumn, October or something.. But
they changed it to the same date as Icing. So i've attended
5 Icing parties instead. But Icing sucks. So I'll go to
                Remedy next year instead

<|ps|> what has been the best demoparty you been to then? :)

        <baloo> I'd say, Compusphere 9 ('97) or Bushparty 6.

        <|ps|> why those 2? :)

        <baloo> i had fun :)

<|ps|> thats one damn easy way of cutting a long story short..
               cammon.. tell us about them..

<baloo> Bush6, nice people.. nice weather.. good organizers..
cs9, i don't remember much from this event. just that it was
the most fun party i had been to at the time.

<|ps|> ok, what has been happening with blocc lately? :)

<baloo> Flex's code always seems to fuck up near parties. we
released an intro at Dreamhack just recently. I'm not
really involved in it tho'. i've only done some gfx.

        <|ps|> whats blocc's future plans then? :)

<baloo> I don't know, Flex wants to do something for TP9. But we've
                not planned anything.

<|ps|> what about replay? whats the future plan for world domination?

<baloo> we plan shortly. TP. demo/intro.. maybe an accelerated demo
if the organizers can wake up and find out what's happening
out there. they should include a TNT card in the compo
                computer.

<|ps|> you planning to actually go to the party place?

        <baloo> YES :)
this will be my forth the party, i like it. always nice to
meet all people and watch the compos.
                lovely

<|ps|> are you ready for demojournal topquizshow contest? :)

        <baloo> hmm. shoot!

<|ps|> 1. whats your favorite color?

        <baloo> grey at the moment

<|ps|> 2. what was the most interesting book/movie you ever
               read/seen?

<baloo> uhm.. I'd say.. Enter the dragon

<|ps|> 3. When you were small and grown people asked you what you
wanted to do when you grew up, what did you answer?

<baloo> I wanted to be HE-MAN - master of the universe
                still want to be :D

<|ps|> 4. if you died and would be respawned into an animal, which
one would you want to be?

<baloo> A turtle.. it can be really old, and all it does is to swim
                around in the ocean.

<|ps|> 5. what is the meaning of life?

<baloo> it is to have fun.

<|ps|> whats are your favorite demos of all times?

<baloo> hmm. that's a hard nut to crack..
one of my favourites is Square.

        <|ps|> and thats it?

<baloo> i can't come up with anything else...
                zilog is lovely
wonder aswell sunflower is the group of the future
                blasphemy releases
                riprap
                state of mind

<|ps|> well, what happened to those early scene years? never liked
               anything?

        <baloo> 303 is a great classic
ofcourse i did.. but i think that they where good for it's
                time. there is better demos

<|ps|> okidokie lets talk about shine diskmag.
               what's happening with it?

<baloo> we're trying to make it larger. more articles. but
interesting articles comes first. i also want a nice looking
mag.. hugi has a lot of articles. but many of them are bad
                shine#6 will be a change.

<|ps|> many folks complain about shine not working or beeing bugged.

        <baloo> there's 2 known bugs with shine5.. the dos4gw error.. people
that don't have dos4gw in the path (i don't know what people
this is. loads of demos requires dos4gw, why not have it in
the path?) the problem solves when dos4gw is in the path,
but not in the same directory, also some people gets an
error with ims. (i didn't do it :) but it doesn't work for
them with nosound. and i have no idea why).. these problems
                will be solved,
and it will also be faster.. win32 interface.
                windowed/fullscreen.. antialiased fonts, automatic spacing..
easy and nice to read. imho

<|ps|> why did you decided to kill it on issue3 and then later why
               the comeback?

<baloo> we got tired of it.. the scene is too lazy, not supporting
diskmags enough.. but we didn't think that it was any good
mag out there. so we decided to make more issues.

<|ps|> well.. have you been getting any more support lately?

<baloo> not really. but i've got comments from a lot of people
(mostly wellknown respected sceners, no names) that likes
it, and they don't like hugi. so i'll continue, to please
                the crowd

<|ps|> i heard the online voting is operational for shine6.. care to
               do some advertising?

        <baloo> Sure.
-- If you think that you think different and that your not
affected by other people's thought. give it a try and
                register as a voter on http://shine.scene.org - if you'll
receive a email back that tells you that you may vote. do
it. we also want articles. and don't think that everyone
else writes. write yourself. and we'll include it. your
                thought, and no one elses.

<|ps|> ok, enough of diskmag shit. whats the point on beeing a
               scener?

<baloo> i only do it because i have fun, when i'm not having fun.
you wont see me anymore :)

<|ps|> what do you do on real life?

<baloo> i'm unemployed at the moment. looking for a job. spending
time with friends - normal stuff.

<|ps|> did you finish your studies past summer?

        <baloo> yes

<|ps|> how old are you now? :)

        <baloo> i'll be 19 in about a month

<|ps|> ok, philosofical question coming up: why do beers start
tasting terribly bad when you are at 3/4?

<baloo> that's a good question.. i guess when you drink it,
everything that's been in your mouth recently, now is in the
                bottle. :D

<|ps|> :P ok, who are your favorite coders/gfxians/trackers?

        <baloo> coders.. i have to say.. statix,unreal,mrock
gfx.. ra is absolutely the best.. but i also like haplo,
                made, visualize..
musicians.. radix, distance, croaker, bStates, md, balrog..
and i'm probably forgetting lots of people now aswell

<|ps|> :) what do you think about this new breed of intros that have

=====! demo !==================================================================

        Offbrain by Nocturnal (party-version)
        Found at www.scene.org
        2nd place at the Norvegia'99

        System requirements:
3.5 MB HD, windows, 320*240*32bit capable videocard.

        The demo:
Aha, here we have a pure 2D-demo. At the first sight, it's a bit
overwhelming. On every screen, there are 4 or 5 layers with effects.
But after a while, you'll see that there is not much variation
between the different parts. There's always a photoshopped
background that pulses (zooms in/out) to the beat, with a plasma or
tunnel-fx over it. On top of this, there are letters and binary
numbers scrolling at different speeds, a la "The Matrix". Also
TV-snow is used in every frame, I don't really like this because it
makes the backgrounds look grainy without adding much to the demo.
And last, there are scrollers and bitmaps like those used in
        design-demos, f.e. circles (dis)appearing in a semi-random pattern.
The backgrounds are all photoshopped, and remind me of the
Superstition-demos: a mix of faces, landscapes and words in
different fonts, with lots of colors and contrast. The music is a
kind of dim, with a slow melodic start, but after awhile the drums
and other percussion take over, with the pulsing background synced
to it. It's not really my style, but hey, everyone knows I've bad
        taste :)

        Worth the download ?
Something that makes this demo hard to judge is the mix of styles.
It reminds me of Moral Hard Candy, Superstition demos, a few
Cocoon-style things, combined with some oldskool effects... In some
parts this works (like the greetings, the mix of the plasma and the
numbers looks really good), but in others it doesn't. Also, the parts
are quite long (30sec-1 min) with little variation. Especially the
snow and the falling numbers should have been used less often.
So overall it's not bad, nor really good. For the motivated
        demo-watchers.
                                                                        Seven

        The Deceit
        Saag / Noise
        www.noisemusic.org

A new member of Noise has brought something special with. He
has made an ambient track which is usually made of steeldrums and
electronical sounds, and he substituted these sounds with regular
orchestral instruments. You can hear there violins and strings,
rhythm is kept by hitting the wood of instruments and by other
unusual ways of playing them. All this forms a very interesting
        track which you shouldn't miss.

        Deeper into the hole 12"
        Zinc
        www.noisemusic.org

Today's 2nd review is also from Noise archives. It's a track
by Zinc and because he is singing here, I had to get it. As the
main instrument of the most important part he used (Yeah you got
it!) his own voice and I think his voice is the only thing that
makes it really interesting. Even when it's quite experimental
and sung, it differs from Hunz (who is a logical comparison) a
lot. Zinc's track is build more on repetition, it's hypnotizing
and it will make you almost fall asleep. I quite like this kind
of music and I recommend it also to you.

        In my life, my Mind
        Wave
        www.fm.org

After a long time a release from Wave under FM label. It's a small
remind on the time of C64. Sounds from it form the background of this
tune and Wave adds to it quite good melody in his typical style. It's
just another great release of Five Musicians and that's enough what
needs to be said. I think I'll have to find my good old ZX Spectrum
	again.

        Bothersome (Mother mix)
        Distance
        www.mono211.com -> monotonik

Distance has remixed his older track with a very good result.
No noises, just pure sounds of ambient and minimalistic music. I
think it's his best mp3 release (actually I've heard only 2 or 3).

                                                                       tryhuk

=====! question !==============================================================

        > question of the week:
        > what is the 1 best tracked song of all times?

        duh...
Ice Frontier by Skaven/FC ... ahhhh.. those were the days!
        amit

So far it is Musiklinjen / Tip ^ Firefox
That's the music from Enigma/Phenomena, a well known amiga demo
        (at least for me).
        teo

        mechanism 8 /necros
        dfj

there is no single track that could be called the best.
        tuulenvire by dizzy/cncd
        kangaspuut by ukulele/banal projects
        lumi sad by andy/banal projects.
carnaq by dune/orange (entered to juhla'95 multichannelcompo by
        postman-pat/orange)
        distance

        banana split!
        thor

Well, the most fun one is "Cigarette Smoke" by Dreamer.
        sagacity

        Second Reality by Skaven
        bam

        dizzy/cncd : Tuulenvire
        Puolikuu

arggggg! how can you expect ppl who have listen to and loved
tracked music for *years* pick one song???
---*add ps.vs.hugi style flame here*--- ;)
        mosh

        Genocide/Bartesek
        szum

I think it's 'True' by Radix^Scorpik. That's tune is beautiful!
        echo

Well... hard question... there is so lots of great songs.
But i'm listening "Martian lovesong" (Necros) and i can say it's the
best tracked song... before the next in my playlist :)
        wishbone

"Tiara" by Symbiote (http://www.innerverse.com/ub/ , look for the
"Symbiote EP"). It's 20 minutes of finest psytrance in a 2.5mb xm
file. Hear it through hq hifi equipment (I recommend almost linear
frequency response, too much bass destroys the atmosphere), close
        your eyes and start dreaming...
Malte [editor: that symbiote used to be known as balrog back on 95/6]

        Letting Go by WAVE
        datschge

        ehm. for marie by xerxes/level-d
or ehm. holo by kenny beltrey/fridge
and ofcourse ne vsak nyni by boop/phym
        eggbird

Sorrow's Triumph/Obsidian Dream (unknown song, yes. It's in
a classic style, which I like, and there are very few songs like
        that).
        seven

although i don't give too much for techno and lizardking is my fave
composer, i'd name the 'dope'-soundtrack as the tune i remember
        best. makes me hummin everytime...
        t.c.p.

hey, answer to question of the week isn't easy at all. Maybe it
should be the song that brought me to scene archives - that means
something by PM, probably "Inside Out" or "Starshine".
        tryhuk

unreal goes camping ;D [editor: by radix]
        wojtek

        Jogeir Liljedahl: Guitar Slinger
        melwyn

just one? argh, hard to decide...
`oolah`? by groo [the module from `stars`].
        kresh

Skaven's and Purple Motion's zak in the Second Reality.
        Of course :]]]]]
        aries

        "agnieszka" by ZoltarX
        gardner

actually i think there are a lot very good songs, but i got three
        songs that i like best:
"Catch that goblin!!" by Skaven/Future Crew
        "Cloudscape" by Zodiak/Cascada
        "Zandmars" by Andromeda/Green
Sorry, but i just can't choose between them
        DJefke

Send Me driftin' by Hunz of Five Musicians (the samples rule, the
vocal tunes rule, the melody rule, ... :)
        sacha

        the 'arte'-soundtrack maybe...
        cp

hmmm...gotta be something from the Amiga dayz.
Ziphoid / Razor 1911 made some asskicking songs in the
late 80's/early 90's. But I think Beyond Music by Captain
is one of the best ever.
