=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Sat Jan 08 14:24:50 2000

        *** acryl has joined #demojournal

        <acryl> hello !

        <|ps|> hello mr.acryl! :) so who are you? :)

<acryl> well first of all i am not "mr.acryl" .. plain acryl
lot of people confuse me with mr.acryl from anadune ...
i am acryl scoopex .. graphican by profession ;D
                22 years old ..

<|ps|> ok plain acryl :) so who are you then? :)

<acryl> hehe my real name is .. guess .. Michael and well i suck at
                interviews .. =D . I work as a texture , skin and general
graphican at Zetha Gamez in Paris . In demoscene live i am
a member of Scoopex , Abyss , Haujobb and the newly formed
                Super Power Crew

<|ps|> how did you started into pixel plotting? :)

<acryl> ehhhh .. that was long time ago .. it started out on the
infamous ColourGenie ... on which you had the possibility to
do graphics using those strange blocks .. like on c64 ..
                later i moved to atari st .. first 512 then 1024 ... and i
worked a bit with Degas Paint
in 94 i bought my first pc ..

        <|ps|> 94 seems far away

        <acryl> 6 years to be precise =)
my first party where i saw real graphics was tp4 ..
that's where i met ppl like cyclone and peachy

<|ps|> tell us about tp4.. :) how was it? :)

<acryl> it was just great .. =D .. i was with the haujobb guys ...
boozing ... ehm shouting pc suxx etc .. hehe . i really knew
nobody there . i was what you call a lamer =)

<|ps|> hehe, so when did you got really into demoscene?

        <acryl> hmmmm let's think ...
as far as i remember my first demo group was
Legend Design .. anyone remember that one ? I met Pit Bull
on wired 95 . and well he looked for a graphican
                so i joined =)
it was a dream come true to be in one group like necros and
                pitbull

<|ps|> were you any good at the time? :)

        <acryl> i don't think so .. i was quite bad ... actually i don't
like my stuff from that period anymore .. but that's the
deal with all artists looking back i guess
i don't even remember WHAT i did in that time ;D
                hehe
                i guess it sucked

<|ps|> so what happened next with legend design?

<acryl> well ... the group released the wired 96 report ..
featuring my graphics .. ( well at least the interface ,
the title pic was done by pl ) ...
and hmmm later pit bull joined imphobia and legend design
was no more .. but i was also member in acme so it didn't
                hit me that hard =)

<|ps|> when did you joined scoopex?

<acryl> ehhh i remember quite well .. that was mekka symposium 97
... i was boozing with Antibyte and Unreal . And Anti made
me the offer to join . Guess how happy i was .. i drank 2
times more than i should =D hehe
and with scoopex i actually was more active than before =)

<|ps|> haha :) and when did you joined haujobb then?

<acryl> that was last year on my birthday =D .. on LTP 3 ...
I don't know why i was not joining before ..

<|ps|> your bday was at ltp?

<acryl> but i always had very good contact with the guys from
haujobb jepp .. probably you don't remember .. but i think
                i told you =)

        <|ps|> your right i dont remember :)
hehe, so thats why xxx brought so many beer :D to celebrate
               your bday :)

        <acryl> hehe .. anyway .. i got 22 so it's no big deal ;D
                yeah .. =D

<|ps|> german beer is weird.. your cans are taller

<acryl> it was actually very cool that they came the way from
germany .. hmmm well i think that's the same with danish
beer =) .. and i would say that beer in other countries is
weird .. the cans are smaller =P

<|ps|> hihi, so what is your favorite beer? :)

<acryl> well in germany it's beer from my hometown dortmund ..
it's kronen export .. i grew up with it .. so i love it =)
in france i drink all kinds of stuff ..
but leffe proved to be the most available and strongest =)

<|ps|> no carlsberg or tuborg for you? :)

<acryl> btw. all ppl from dortmund love kronen export =D
                nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
dortmund is THE beer city .. we got the most breweries ..
so why should i drink something else than beer from
                dortmund ? =) ..
and all beers are brewed according to the german purity law
                that rules

<|ps|> =) german purity law is nice :)

<acryl> it's like italians with their pasta
it's my fav. law =D hehe

<|ps|> but italians go to chinese restaurants instead of pizzerias..

        <acryl> really ?

        <|ps|> yeah :)

<acryl> well the ones i know pray to the god of pasta =)

        <|ps|> italians are nuts :)

        <acryl> hehe ;D ..

<|ps|> ok, serious questions now, what advice do you give for ppl
starting to do graphics out there :)

<acryl> well my advice is not new : paint as much as you can ,
experiment , look what other people do and try to develop
                your own way of working
practice is the best teacher imho
for inspiration look at comic books
at fantasy art ( boris for example )
and check out Simon Bisley ... his style is wild but really
                really cool =)
and .. for god sake .. don't hesitate to ask other
graphicans on how they did something ..
if i would not have done that i would still don't know how
to use a pixel program =)

        <|ps|> who is simon bisley?

        <acryl> ehh .. ok .. sincerly i didn't expect that question .. ok :
Simon Bisley drawed Slaine , Judge Dredd , Batman and lately
he did the conceptual artwork for F.A.K.K. 2
his style is so cool , it's just amazing . and he is
combining different drawing methods like i didnt see it
                before

<|ps|> im into marvel not DC comics :)

<acryl> well i know only a little about comics .. except the fact
that i like them ... i mean the ones that are painted well
most of the storylines are so confusing ..
and you have to buy the whole series to follow .
                spawn ... that's a cool comic .. but i know nothing about
the story .. except that was shown in the movie .

<|ps|> =) ok, so who are/were your inspirations.. besides
               simon bisley :)

<acryl> hmmm .. boris was the first fantasy artist that really
impressed me . the other inspirations .. hmmm .. dunno ..
i got a lot from watching alien and bladerunner

<|ps|> you heavy into sci-fi stuff?

<acryl> i really like the feel from it , these movies inspire me a
lot . no i wouldnt say that .. i also got some influence
from old adventure games from lucas arts .. like monkey
island .. thats no joke ..
actually when i was a kid i always dreamed of doing
computer graphics for games .. well now i am doing it .
tell me what did you expect ? =)

<|ps|> have you made gfx for any "famous" games yet? :)

<acryl> hehe .. well no as i am working on a project that is to be
released this year , it cant be famous . but some computer
magazines already made some good previews on it .
so i hope it will be famous one day =)
                it's called DroneZ =) http://www.dronez.com hehe
that's where to find more information on that game
                *end of commerical announcement*

        <|ps|> ;) do sceners with a "i know acryl" stamp get a discount? :)

        <acryl> haha =D .. that would be cool . but sincerly i really don't
                think so ;D ..

<|ps|> darn :) ok.. so are you ready for demojournal's quizshow

Found at ftp://acid2.stack.nl (scene.org was unreachable...)
1st place at The Party'99, non-accelerated demo compo

        System requirements:
7 MB HD, Win9X, 64 MB ram but more recommended. [ed: MMX req.]

        The demo:
"Only" a week after the event, I was able to grab the TP99 demos
from the net due to the holidays, the family reunions and the bad
weather :-/ At least I know what to blame. Anyway, while unzipping
the stuff on my HD I noticed already that the two highest-ranked
demos are both win-only (dll-stuff) and both use MP3. It's likely
that the year 2000 will bring us many such demos, whether you like
it or not. The first time I saw Melrose Space, it had horrible
delays, about 1 sec freezing every 5 ones. At the bottom of the
info-file, I found "note: 64 meg crybabies have to use the command
\melrose.exe 64". Aha, thank you, it seems that the requirements
will also reach new heights in 2000 (Shad 2 was ahead of its time :).
The overall style is somewhere between effect- and design-demos.
Full-screen 640*480 is used, an improvement over 512*384, but the
top and bottom quarter are often left black or white, or it shows
a still picture. The effects are quite varied, and include very nice
radial-blurred lines and plasmas, a cloud-rotozoomer, some combined
rubber cylinders, the outlines of 2D-metaballs, ... The best one IMO
is a standard boring tunnel that, when zooming out, is tiled all
over the screen, but each copy is colored differently, and the whole
shows a face. 3D objects are mostly abstract, morphing forms, or
math-objects like torusses. Their outfit ranges from black
anti-aliased lines over transparent flat colors to fine phong-shaded
texturemapping. Two special things: the full-screen point-filter at
the start, and the meta-torusses and -balls near the end.
I've never watched Melrose Place on TV, but I assume the pictures
show the actors (unless all 3state members are pretty babes) :). The
face close-up at the end is probably self-made, and there's a nice
image of 3 girls that could be hand-drawn (you can never be sure
today :-/). Besides mostly photoshopped people, there are only
design-patterns and some hardly recognizable black&white clips. The
whole demo is not very colorful, lots of parts are in shades of
gray, or as the info-file says it: "our colors are not random" :).
The music is in the drum/electronic genre. There's no real singing,
but there's a long spoken-word "statement", and lots of other
voice-fragments. Here MP3 is definitely the right choice. Over
5 minutes music+voice in 2.7 MB is not that bad, is it?

        Worth the download ?
Yes, even with "only" 64MB it's quite enjoyable. However, after
reading the bragging in the info-file, I was expecting more from the
group that says "It is time to lay out the rules for you. We are at
the top of the foodchain, you are our lunch." and "Some cynics might
say it is too late for you to ever make it to the top. They are
right. That top is ours." Of course, this COULD :) be an attempt
a la EliteGroup to bring a more competitive spirit in the scene.
Anyway, if I feel like knowing who's on top of the scene I'll check
some charts. So for all of you: get Melrose Space (and some other
TP99 demos while you're at it), watch them, and decide if/where they
        belong in your vote-forms.
                                                                        Seven

=====! intro !=================================================================

        Burra! by Aardbei
        64 kilobytes intro
3rd place out of 10 at The Party 1999

        Credits:
        Ile - programming
        Rob - programming
        Oxygener - music
        Oyise - graphics

        Download:
        ftp://flerp.scene.hu/.1/DEMO.'99/TheParty.'99/64k/burraf.zip

The group Aardbei is quite into making 64kb intros. If I
remember well, their first intro was Fish at Summer Encounter
1998, and since then they are releasing three intros a year or
so. The newer ones are even very good; they are among the best
intros around. I recommend checking out some: Cashcow at
Dreamhack 1999 and especially Pole at Takeover 1999. Their
work is unfortunately not really respected, at least this is
the way I see it from the diskmags' charts.
So, here we go. This one got the third place at The Party. It
runs under Windows, which is becoming more and more popular
        platform for 64kb intros.
It is in the TBL intro style, so we won't see wireframe
rendering, transparent circles, or such - which are the
        fashion these days.
The textures are good, even though the most often used has a
purplish-brown color, which does not come in for me at all...
There is a fine Burra! logo.
The music tries to follow the Stash-trend in style, but I
think that this time the composer was not given megabytes of
generated instruments... The tune is quite good anyway.
Most commonly there is a bitmap effect in the background -
plasma, tunnel, or something of this kind. These are often
multi-layered. There is a radial blur effect, too.
There are separate 3d objects, but no 3d scenes. There is two
kind of them. One is a morphing, spiky sphere, the kind we've
seen in TBL releases, for example Stash, or Contour (the only
difference is that the texture mapping is not buggy here :)
The other object is a cube, with one morphing tentacle at each
        plane of it.
All these things I mentioned so far are mixed in a quite fine
way, with proper synchronisation to the music.
In the last part the Burra! logo is morphing in the
background, the cube with the tentacles is rolling in front
and there is radial blur over all this - well, this looks
        really amazing.
To tell something negative, too, I would mention the ugly
font and the boring greetings part.
This intro is not too original, but everything is made in a
quite fine way. The effects are spectacular. The code has no
visible bugs like missing pixels or such. All in all I like it
        - well, no surprise, that is why this one was chosen to be
        reviewed.
                                                                        Gekko

Awesome idm release. 4 tracks of great ambient sounds all around
one track with some awesome remixes. Great bundle!
                                                                           ps

        Audiophonik CD
        various people
        www.imphobia.org

It's 29th of the December and I'm picking up my post. Belgium,
finally it is here. I open a big envelope and find a CD and a
message "enjoy the CD,..." - thank you very much. But that's only
        beginning. :)
As you'll take the CD into your hands, you'll see that it is very
professional work. It contains nice booklet where every author has
his own page (almost) which contains basic information about person,
projects and his comments to the tune. It includes also photos, so
you can see how do they look like. Btw, ps - you're between respects.
The music. I originally thought on reviewing every track separately
but I'm too lazy and there isn't actually any reason for it. All
tracks are superb, and in my opinion some artist have here their best
songs ever. Style of the tracks differs, jogeir's tune is more
orchestral, moby's tune is more electronical, but that actually does
not matter. All tracks are a lot ambient, often with great drumlines
and floating on resonating sounds. I enjoyed whole CD and that
doesn't happen to me often. However for out-of-scener it can be
        incomprehensible.
If you're into scene music, get it. I think that it's price is fair
and this CD is worth it. If you want, you can check mp3 extracts of
the songs (www.imphobia.org) and you can also find some of them on
the rts9 musicdisk. I like it a LOT.
                                                                       tryhuk
