    --=[ foreword ]=-------------------------------------------------------

three weeks have passed since the first newsletter about the upcoming
hugi diskmag #12. in the meantime a lot has happened, which brought me
to write another edition of this newsletter. i intend to make this
newsletter a regular feature, bringing you the latest happenings
concerning the hugi diskmag and hugi size coding competitions, thus
making the time between each two issues of the diskmag a little more
    exciting.

in issue 32 of the coders f/x bbs publication and newsletter, civax/mnh
mentioned the last hugi newsletter and described it as a "diskmag about
hugi", which sounded quite amusing when I read read it. :) though,
actually: a diskmag about a diskmag, why not? that's something the
scene hasn't had before. nevertheless this idea is nonsense: making a
real diskmag requires embedding it into an interface, but as this
newsletter ought to be small to download, it shall remain ascii-only.

i will publish new issues of this newsletter in an irregular manner,
depending upon whether there have been enough interesting things about
hugi. expect a new issue about every two-four weeks.

    --=[ new distsites ]=--------------------------------------------------

thanks to bivanbi, hugi has now got an official hungarian ftp-distsite:

    > ftp://abacus.vaciut.elender.hu/pub/zine/hugi

the hugi download homepage (http://home.pages.de/~hugidownload/) is
    mirrored at:

    > http://www.freeshells.net/~sengir/hugi

so if the original server causes any trouble (which, thank goodness,
has never happened so far), you will still have an opportunity to
download any of the hugi issues that have been released. thanks to
sengir of cyberpictures for installing this mirror site.

moreover, hugi has now got its very own directory at ftp.scene.org:

    > ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/mags/hugi

you can currently download all issues since hugi #9, and should soon be
able to download all issues that have been released. thanks go out to
redhound for creating the directory. keep up the good work with
    scene.org!

    --=[ 4th place at hornet charts! ]=------------------------------------

since the release of hugi #11, which is the first international issue
of hugi, hugi's rank at the hornet charts has advanced dramatically.
before hugi #11, we were stuck at 20th place. now, on august 16th, we
have climbed up to 4th place of the "demoscene publications" worldwide.
only eight points separate us from the third place. if you don't
believe it, check it out yourself!

--=[ hugi compo was reviewed at www.slashdot.org! ]=-------------------

the hugi size coding competition series was introduced at
www.slashdot.org. which gave the compo homepage 4000 hits in just one
day. furthermore, on the same day, approximately 600 people downloaded
    hugi.

    > http://www.slashdot.org

--=[ hugi size coding competition #3 is over! ]=-----------------------

the hugi size coding compo #3 (the pong compo), ended on the 10th of
august. now the public judgement week is over. you can get the final
results at the compo-homepage, and as always, the sourcepack is also
available. this compo's winner is guillermo sais from mexico with an
entry of 142 bytes. in fact, whilst being judged, the size of his entry
could even be reduced to 140 bytes. for further information, check out:

--=[ action in the hugi crew ]=----------------------------------------

xxx has decided to give up his activities in the diskmag scene and has
left the hugi crew. he wants to restart his scene career under the new
handle datasun. currently, the following people remain in the hugi
    crew:

    /-name----------/-function in group-/-email address------------/
      Adok . orga/edit/text . hugi@netway.at
      Mr. SEQ . gfx/music . daniel.tuecks@t-online.de
      Mr. M!ke . text (german) . mrmike@forfree.at
    /--------------------------------------------------------------/

however, we are ready to accept new members so if you like hugi and
want to contribute, you are welcome to join us. just contact adok
(hugi@netway.at) for further information. we are especially interested
in writers (english and german), graphicians, ascii artists, swappers,
    web designers, and musicians.

you can, of course still remain in your old group(s), even if you do
join the hugi crew, and you certainly don't have to be member of the
hugi crew to contribute to the diskmag.

    --=[ hugi #12 in progress ]=-------------------------------------------

since the last newsletter, the next hugi issue has steadily grown. all
in all we've got 500 kbyte of articles so far which is quite a lot for
such a short time. these articles are mainly:

    () interviews (e.g. picard/rhyme, sentinel/excess, digisnap/matrix,
       altair/odds, michael maier)
() reviews (diskmags, musicdisks, soon: partyreports)
() party stuff (invitations, results, reports)
() quite a lot of articles about the scene in general (more than in
       hugi #11)
    () loads of german poetry
    () some good english poetry
() a huge report about the german diskmagscene (german version is
almost finished, english translation will follow; length: 80 kbyte)
() coding articles (e.g. compression algorithms, splines, rotozoomer,
       antialiasing)
    () some german local-scene texts

this is just to give you a brief overview of what we already have and
what we are still missing. if you want to write anything, your articles
    will be most welcome.

what we are especially looking for at the moment is party reports and
interviews. similarly, any demo reviews be well received, as at the
moment, we still don't have any.

news, messages, adverts and votes are also welcome. number of
    votesheets so far: 72.

moreover, we want to install a section for musicians. this section
    can contain articles about:

    () the tracker scene
    () tracking tools
    () tracking tutorials
    () musicdisk reviews

if you are a musician and want to contribute to this section, please
contact us. feel free to make suggestions concerning anything else
which may be of interest to other musicians.

in general, anything which will interest the readers is welcome. it
doesn't even have to be something related to computers. how about real
life, poetry, stories, or political topics?

feel free to contact me [adok - hugi@netway.at]. we can talk about
    anything.

btw: the music is finished, the background gfx are almost finished, and
the other gfx are in progress. if you would like to do the gfx/music
for future issues just contact me.

    --=[ new interface! ]=-------------------------------------------------

the new interface of hugi #12, which is coded by street raider of ddt
entertainment, is almost finished and boasts both a dos and a native
win32-version (direct x 3.0 required). new features are: keyboard
support (finally! :), embedded vga pictures in articles, support for
ansi graphics, and external links that lead directly to the internet.

if you want to beta-test this great new interface, contact me [adok]!

    direct x is available at:

    --=[ closing words ]=--------------------------------------------------

this is the second volume of the hugi newsletter. i hope you liked it
and it motivated you to get active for hugi. :) the hugi #12 release is
planned for september, though till then there's still a lot of time
which we can use to create another good issue. i'm looking forward to
    your support!
