                      [version 1.98, beta release 1]

-/- XMM198a.ZIP [version 1.98, beta release 1], August 11th, 1996

Second official beta release. We made many improvements / enhancments
in addition to fixing numerous bugs.

  New Features:

Extended MikMod now supports New Note Actions on playback of IT mod-
ules! Check XMM.DOC for information about how XMM deals with New Note
     Actions.

Full support for IT v2.xx modules has been added.

Sample vibratos for .XMs and .ITs are fully supported.

Added support for an array of previously non-implimented IT features,
mostly those pertaining to or related to NNAs and the IT `S7x' extend-
     ed commands.

Added `real' volume bars to the DMP shell [supported under SB / mixing
cards only.. GUS real volume bars might be added later].

The comment window in the XPlay shell actually displays the comments.
For IT comments larger than the window, use the cursor keys to scroll
     around.

The XPlay pattern advance keys have been moved to PageUp / PageDn due
to the cursor key scrolling of the comment window.

Added comment display to the XMM Emulation shell. Press `I' to switch
between Instrument, Sample, and Comment display modes.

Modified / rewrote some code to be more Linux friendly. Expect a port
of XMM to Linux sometime in the near future!

The "recurse_subdirs" and "max_songlist" options have been removed
from the configuration file, and some new options have been added:

confirm_exit - enable / disable confirmation (double escape) on
                         exit from Extended MikMod.
load_m15 - enable / disable detection and loading of 15-
                         instrument modules.

The std_vga option has been renamed to "vga_compatability" and now
supports three levels of compatability rather than one.

  Bugs Fixed:

The FastTracker 2 multi-channel .MOD format was not supported.

Sample looping bug on IT's corrected. (Caused by a deliberate change
we made only moments before the first official beta release.. oops!)

Bug with IT volume envelopes ending pre-maturely and cutting samples.

Vibratos for ITs were implimented incorrectly.

Note Off and Note Fade did the same thing.. :)

The `/vga' option no longer automatically sets Windows compatability
mode, and the video mode-set has been improved to be more compatable.

A new command-line interface has been adopted which has solved several
memory bugs present previously. The new command-line interpreter is
     MUCH more flexible as well.

  Known bugs / non-implimentations:

SB support has a few holes in it. We have encountered a couple dif-
ferent generic SB types (namely the Packard Bell clone card) that XMM
either doesn't work at all or works very poorly.

VGA support is crummy on some video cards, particuarly the Matrox
series. See XMM.DOC [Section 5: Trouble Shooting] for info that may
help you get the best results if you have display problems.

Control characters in 80x50 text modes (DMP, XPlay) may not display
     properly.

A rare bug may cause a certain module to play "funny" and may crash
the system. This seems quite random right now and nearly impossible
     to pin-point.

As well, certain rare modules seem to mess up the module manager dis-
play. Again, it's rare and very hard to pin-point.

The next version of XMM should have it's own keyboard handler to allow
for better keyboard support and more command variety.
